In a bid to further curb the issue, new rules have been formulated to further aid in the reduction of air pollution throughout the country.

Till now only the 5 metros had to follow a stricter norm of Bharat Stage III while manufacturers could supply Bharat Stage II vehicles to the rest of the country. This is set to change on 1, April, 2010, when the Bharat Stage IV norms come into effect, as the norms will now be extended to 11 major cities which includes, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kanpur and Agra.
