The new hatchback will, for the first time, utilise the VW Group’s MQB-A0 platform that has already been localised in India

  • The new platform will make the Fabia bigger than before, with boot space now more by 50 litres.

  • Cabin and features likely to be inspired by Octavia and Scala.

  • Will be powered by a petrol engine, with the option of a manual and 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

  • Fabia could return to India by 2022 via the localised MQB-A0-IN platform.

  • It will rival the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz, and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Skoda is all set to introduce the fourth iteration of the Fabia overseas. The hatchback has been teased for the first time, revealing a variety of updates on offer.

To start things off, the new Fabia will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s smallest modular platform, the MQB-A0. As a result, the Fabia will be bigger now, evident from the teaser image. Boot space has also increased by 50 litres. Previous spy shots hint at an evolved design, with elements like the butterfly grille and LED tail lamps likely to be retained.

Cabin shots are yet to surface, but expect it to be similar to that of the Octavia and Scala. That said, the space inside is also likely to increase, considering the hatchback would be larger in size. In terms of safety, the carmaker has hinted at improved passive safety features and the addition of multiple modern assistance systems.

Under the hood, the Fabia will be powered by petrol engines from the VW Group’s EVO range. Transmission options will include a manual gearbox and a 7-speed DSG automatic, with power being sent to the front wheels. The prime powertrain option on the new Fabia will be the 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine, now manufactured in India.

The fourth-generation Skoda Fabia will make its global debut in Q2 2021. There’s a good chance that the new Fabia may make it to India, considering  the VW Group has a localised version of the MQB-A0 platform, called the MQB-A0-IN. This could help with competitive pricing. Expect the India-spec model to be powered by the 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine like the Rapid.

As for a launch timeline in India, the Fabia could arrive in 2022 alongside with the new Polo. It will take on the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz, and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. For now, Skoda’s 2021 plans include the launch of the Kushaq, and potentially the next-gen Octavia and Kodiaq TSI later this year.
