There may not have been a lot of racing action per se, yet there was quite a bit to talk about

The last week in motorsport made headlines for various reasons. First up, we saw Formula One and Formula 2 racing on the streets of Monaco, followed by a MotoGP rider being ruled out of the Italian Grand Prix, and the unfortunate passing of an ex-FIA president. Here’s more on what transpired:

Formula One

TThe fifth round of the 2021 Formula One at Monaco saw an almost single-file race with some surprise results. Red Bull Honda’s Max Verstappen won in dominant fashion beating Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes had one forgettable race, which caused significant activity in both the drivers and constructors’ standings. Verstappen leads the drivers' standings by four points over Hamilton, with Red Bull Honda ahead of Mercedes by a single point in the constructors’ tally.

Formula 2

It was a weekend to forget for Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala in the second round of the season at Monaco. Qualifying 11th, the Indian driver struggled to make up ground, considering Monaco has traditionally been a difficult track for overtaking. After having finished 11th and 8th in the two sprint races, the Indian driver’s weekend came to an abrupt end in the feature race with a race-ending collision. This dropped him down to eighth in the drivers standings. Of course he’ll will want to make amends at Baku scheduled to run from June 4-6.

FIA

Ex-FIA President Max Mosely passed away at the age of 81. Sure, he had a penchant for courting controversy. But during his tenure as the FIA President from 1993 to 2009, Mosley was instrumental in pushing for safety in road cars and F1 as well after Rolan Ratzenberger and Aryton Senna’s untimely death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Mosely had quite a few feathers in his cap, including the promotion of Euro NCAP car crash tests, his push for stricter F1 crash tests, and introducing safety devices like Head and Neck Support (HANS)
