The basics might be the same between both the models, but a closer look reveals big differences

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is in the making, with rigorous road testing of the SUV underway. And though its debut is slated for 2024, each and every time the larger off-roader has been spotted, there is something different when compared to the three-door model currently on sale.

Here are 5 such things we know so far that the Mahindra Thar 5-door will get over its 3-door sibling:

Extra Doors

The obvious thing the Thar 5-door will get over the 3-door model is the extra set of doors for rear seat occupants. It significantly boosts the practicality of the SUV, allowing for easier ingress. It’s also larger than the current Thar and we reckon its boot space will also grow in size, as the Thar 5-door will have the same two rows of seating as the 3-door model.

Fixed Metal Hard Top

Currently, the Thar three-door is offered either with a choice of a convertible soft top or a fixed hard plastic roof top. While it remains to be seen which of these roof options will make it to the larger SUV, we do know that the Thar 5-door will get a fixed metal roof top, an element that’s missing in the three-door model. As a result, it’ll also get a headliner in the cabin to up the ambience.

The Feature You All Love

The fixed hard top has also resulted in Mahindra installing a feature we Indians love a lot. Any guesses? Well, the answer is in our detailed exclusive report

A Larger Infotainment System

The current Thar’s 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is easy to use, but has old-school graphics. Mahindra could rectify that with the larger 5-door model by plonking in the larger 8-inch AdrenoX touchscreen infotainment system from the Scorpio N. If that’s the case, you can expect the off-roader to get connected car tech as well.

Revised Suspension Layout

With the addition of an extra set of doors for added practicality, we reckon most of the Thar 5-doors will be used as urban runabouts. Besides, a relatively pliant ride quality is a must if you’ll use it everyday. And guess what? The Thar five-door gets a revised rear suspension as seen in these spy shots. Has that improved the ride? That’s something we can answer post its reveal in 2024.

These are the five things that the Mahindra Thar 5-door gets over the smaller three-door off-roader. Expected to launch in 2024, it’ll be a relatively larger offering than the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door, and an alternative to the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
