Codenamed LB744, the supercar will get a plug-in hybrid powertrain paired with the carmaker’s most powerful V12 petrol engine yet

There’s an electrifying excitement in the air as Lamborghini is about to unveil its next V12 supercar. For now, it’s only referred to by the codename “LB744”, but, aside from its name, the carmaker has indeed given us some important details of the upcoming supercar’s powertrain and the technologies it has, ahead of its reveal on March 29, 2023.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Lamborghini LB744:

Massive V12 power

At the core of the LB744’s power unit lies a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) V12 engine, Lamborghini’s lightest and most powerful 12-cylinder engine yet. Even by itself, the engine is good for 825PS and 725Nm and comes paired with a specially developed eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Plug-in hybrid drivetrain

Alongside the powerful engine, the LB744 has a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that uses three electric motors (two at the front axle and one at the rear). These e-motors draw power from a 3.8kWh battery pack, which is relatively small for a PHEV. The battery may not give you an EV-like range, but on the bright side, it can be charged up in half an hour using a home wall box and using the regenerative braking in six minutes.

Driving Modes

The hybrid system opens up a new dimension of driving options for the LB744 – a total of 13 driving experiences. The main driving modes are familiar, but expanded – efficiency-oriented Citta (City), grand-touring Strada, Sport, Corsa and Performance. In Performance mode, the LB744 gives you the maximum grunt from the three e-motors and V12 engine – a whopping 1015PS combined! Citta turns the supercar into a completely different beast with power limited to just 180PS. The e-motors allow for electronic torque vectoring (sending power to any of the wheels to maximise traction) and the LB744 even has rear-wheel steering.

Full carbon-fibre construction

The LB744 is based on a full-carbon-fibre, aeronautics-inspired “monofuselage”. It’s the first car to have a full carbon-fibre front end built using Lamborhgini’s patented technique, for better crash protection. The rear subframe where the engine and rear e-motor are mounted is made of aluminium.

What’s the V12-powered Aventador successor called?

Alas, despite all kinds of leaks and official details having been revealed, we still don’t know what the LB744 will be called. That said, it’s only a matter of days before we know the complete details about the V12-powered supercar, including its name. Its global premiere is slated for March 29, 2023 after all.

The Lamborghini LB744 gives us quite a few reasons to be excited. It marks a new era of electrification for the carmaker; we’ll see the LB744’s technologies in Lamborghini’s future products as well.

As for its launch in India, Lamborghini hasn’t confirmed it, but fingers crossed, the plug-in hybrid could come to India sometime after its launch overseas, as a rival to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale.
