Starting from April 1, 2025, cars in Maharashtra could be taxed at 20 percent or a maximum of Rs 30 lakh, whichever is lesser

Among the many revisions put out for the taxation of vehicles under the Maharashtra Budget 2025-26, one major change is the increase in the individually owned motor vehicle tax limit from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. Any expensive car that was previously capped at Rs 20 lakh in taxes could now be taxed even more. For mass-market buyers, this revision doesn’t resettle a lot, but if you're considering a car priced over a crore, this is something to take into account. We’ve simplified it further for you in the next section.

What Does This Mean For The Buyers?

For luxury and supercar purchases in Maharashtra after April 1, 2025, you may need to pay significantly more in motor vehicle tax. The revised tax structure means that high-end cars will now be taxed up to Rs 30 lakh instead of the previous Rs 20 lakh cap.

For example, for a car priced at Rs 1.01 crore, 20 percent tax comes to Rs 20.20 lakh, which means you would now need to pay Rs 20,000 extra. Similarly, if a car is priced at Rs 1.50 crore, it would be taxed at 20 percent, which comes to Rs 30 lakh. Earlier, the tax was capped at Rs 20 lakh, so buyers will now have to pay Rs 10 lakh more.

What About Existing Owners?

If you've already bought and registered your car before April 1, 2025, you don’t need to worry. The tax revision is meant for new purchases and does not affect existing car owners, as this motor vehicle tax is a one-time payment at the time of registration.

The Maharashtra government’s decision to increase the motor vehicle tax cap is said to be intended towards generating more state revenue from high-end car sales – as much as Rs 170 crore. This would definitely not impact the mass market, however, if you're planning to upgrade to a luxury or supercar soon, buying before the tax change comes into effect might save you big money.
