The Kia Carens Clavis doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel — instead, it simply sharpens the tools it already has. And that starts under the hood. Carrying forward the tried-and-tested trio of engines from the standard Carens (which are also shared with the Seltos), the Clavis gives you options for every kind of driver — the city crawler, the highway cruiser, and the all-rounder!
Let’s see how each one drives:
Claimed Efficiency: 15.34 kmpl
The first one is the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which churns out 115 PS and 144 Nm.
If you are the kind of driver who enjoys a smooth, drama-free drive and spends more time navigating crowded city lanes than open highways, this should be your go-to choice.
It's refined, quiet, and smooth to operate. Pair it with the light clutch and slick 6-speed manual gearbox, and you get an engine-transmission combo that’s easy to live with. Quick U-turns, bumper-to-bumper traffic, and tight parking spots — the Clavis handles it all without breaking a sweat.
But, it does feel slightly out of breath when your MPV is fully loaded and at times when you want to make a quick overtake or head uphill with a full cabin, be ready to work the gearbox.
A CVT option here would’ve been the cherry on top, but alas, it's missing.
Claimed Efficiency: 15.95 kmpl (MT)
15.95 kmpl (iMT)
16.66 kmpl (DCT)
Next up is our personal favourite, the 1.5-litre Turbo-Petrol, which churns out a healthy 160 PS and 253 Nm. This one is offered with a 6-speed manual, iMT as well as a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
This is the engine that puts the zing in ZigWheels. Whether you're merging onto a highway or overtaking with the family onboard, the turbo-petrol delivers the kind of punch that makes driving feel effortless.
Refinement is acceptable, you’ll only hear it complain if you rev it hard. But performance? That’s where it shines. Paired with the 7-speed DCT, gear shifts are crisp and timely, helping the engine stay in its sweet spot at all times. Brownie points for paddle shifters, too!
If budget’s a concern, the 6-speed iMT gives you a middle ground between convenience and cost. No clutch pedal, but you still get to row through the gears. It is kinda quirky, but practical in stop-and-go traffic.
Just don’t expect saintly fuel efficiency. In dense city traffic, mileage can dip to single digits.
Claimed Efficiency: 19.54 kmpl (MT)
17.50 kmpl (AT)
Lastly, it’s time for the crowd favourite, i.e. the 1.5-litre Diesel motor that produces 116 PS and 250 Nm. Now, you can choose this frugal motor with either a 6-speed slick shift manual or a 6-speed torque converter.
Love long drives? Hate frequent fuel stops? The diesel is your best bet.
It may not be as silent as the petrols, but Kia’s done a commendable job with refinement. It’s torquey, making city drives less of a chore and highway journeys more relaxed. You can cruise at triple-digit speeds without the engine breaking a sweat.
And if you're in the mood to just sit back and cruise, the 6-speed automatic is smooth enough to keep things easy, albeit not as snappy as the DCT.
This engine strikes a fine balance between power and efficiency, and is arguably the most versatile of the bunch.
Built with the comfort of six or seven in mind, the Carens Clavis doesn’t pretend to be a corner-carver, and that’s okay.
Ride quality is tuned for plushness. It irons out potholes and undulations nicely, especially when running light. Over sharper imperfections like rumble strips or broken tarmac, you might feel a slight firmness, but nothing that’ll rattle your bones.
Load the Clavis up with family and luggage, though, and you’ll notice a bit of bounce from the rear at higher speeds, a trait common in vehicles tuned for comfort first.
High-speed stability is impressive. Even at triple-digit speeds, the Clavis feels planted and confident. Lane changes are smooth, and there’s no nervousness from the suspension or the steering.
Speaking of which, the steering is light, quick, and predictable. Exactly, just the way it should be in a family MPV. Push it into a corner and body roll will remind you it’s not a hatchback, but it stays composed enough not to scare the occupants.
The Kia Carens Clavis delivers a driving experience that’s tuned for comfort and ease, not for setting lap times. Each engine serves a distinct purpose:
The 1.5-litre NA petrol is best for smooth, budget-conscious city use.
The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol adds excitement and versatility; Great for longer journeys and confident overtakes.
And the 1.5-litre diesel is your go-to for maximum range and effortless torque.
Add to that a suspension that handles bad roads with grace and a steering setup tuned for daily usability, and you have a family mover that does more than just move your family.
ZigWheels Take: Pick the engine that suits your driving pattern, and the Clavis will deliver a calm, composed, and confidence-inspiring experience every time you hit the road.
