Redesigning the bonnet ornament for better aerodynamics is the height of automotive precision

  • Spectre EV to break cover in late 2023.

  • It’ll have a low drag coefficient of 0.26.

  • Current Rolls models will continue to use the existing ornament.

Rolls Royce has a luxury electric vehicle (EV) in the pipeline that will debut with a new Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet ornament. The Spectre electric sedan will be its most aerodynamic vehicle ever, and it’s expected to arrive in late 2023. By 2030, the carmaker aims to have a fully-electric lineup.

The Spectre EV is under development, and Rolls Royce plans to put it through 25 lakh kilometres of testing. According to the carmaker, the tests simulate four hundred years of use! The engineers also expect to improve the already low 0.26 drag coefficient to make the Spectre more aerodynamic.

Rolls Royce is synonymous with attention to detail, and that shows in the new Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. Designers at Rolls Royce and Goodwood went back to the original drawings of the ornament by Charles Sykes, and recreated the model with a different posture and facial expressions and more aerodynamic robes. Overall, the new Spirit of Ecstasy is 17mm shorter and measures just over eight centimetres.

We’ll see the new ornament no sooner than late 2023 on the bonnet of the Spectre EV. The Spectre could make it to India sometime in 2024, but there's no official word yet from Rolls Royce. Meanwhile, current models such as the Wraith, Ghost, Phantom and Cullinan will continue to use the existing mascot.
