Starting from Rs 12.99 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom), the Mahindra Thar Roxx has been launched as the latest off-roader in the mass market segment. The bigger and more powerful version of the Mahindra Thar competes with the other off-roaders, one of which is the Maruti Jimny. The question is, can the Jimny’s compact form factor fare against the Thar Roxx’s big and feature-rich persona? Find out in this detailed specifications comparison.

* Prices of the Thar Roxx are for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants only, and the prices of the four-wheel-drive (4WD) variants are expected to be revealed soon.

Both the Thar Roxx and the Jimny have a similar starting price, but the price gap between the top-spec variants is over Rs 5.5 lakh. The prices of the Thar Roxx are expected to be even higher with the inclusion of the 4WD variants, however, these high prices are also due to the presence of a diesel powertrain, along with a bigger size and more features.

There is a big size difference between the two SUVs. While the Jimny stays under the 4 metre mark, the Thar Roxx goes well over it. The Mahindra off-roader is bigger than the Maruti one in all dimensions, which not only gives it a bigger and a better road presence, but also allows it to have better space in the cabin.

When it comes to off-road essential angles, both SUVs fare well against each other. On one hand, the Thar Roxx has a better approach angle, and on the other hand, the Jimny has a better departure angle. The breakover angle for both SUVs are almost the same. The Mahindra SUV also gets 650 mm water wading capacity, which is a number that’s not available for the Jimny..

When comparing powertrains, the Thar Roxx is clearly ahead of the Jimny on paper. It not only gets a powerful turbo-petrol engine, but also gets a diesel offering, which the Jimny misses out on. The Thar Roxx also offers better transmission options.

However, while the Jimny gets 4WD as standard, the Thar Roxx only offers it with the diesel powertrain.

Even in terms of features, the Thar Roxx stays ahead of the Jimny. While the Jimny gives you the essential features for your daily needs, the Thar Roxx offers a premium and upmarket cabin experience, which goes beyond daily use features. Even in terms of passenger safety, while both off-roaders do get 6 airbags as standard, the Thar Roxx takes it up a notch by offering a 360-degree camera and level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) features.

However, these additional features come at an additional cost, which is one of the big reasons for the big price difference between the top-spec variants.
If you are looking for an off-roader which can offer good features, space for 4 passengers, and a city-friendly compact form factor along with off-road capabilities, then you should go for the Jimny, as you can get it for a comparatively affordable price.

However, if you want a better road presence, more powerful engine options, and all the bells and whistles of a premium SUV, then you should consider the Mahindra Thar Roxx. It will be heavier on the pocket, but the additional cost will give you a more premium experience.
