Mahindra Thar Roxx and XUV700 are two SUVs with very different demeanors. While one is a proper off-roader, the other is a family SUV with a focus on comfort. But despite their differences, they share the same heart, i.e, the same 2.2-litre diesel engine, albeit in different states of tune. So in today’s story, we strap out V-boxes (timing equipment) and see which one of the two diesel automatic Mahindra SUVs is quicker in the real-life. A quick spec check before the performance test:

Despite having the same engines underneath their respective bonnets, the XUV700 has an upper hand, thanks to a higher state of tune. The family-friendly SUV is also available with an optional all-wheel drivetrain, but considering we have the 4x2 Thar Roxx on test, only the front-wheel drive variant of the XUV700 has been considered.

Both vehicles are available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

The numbers don’t lie, and the result doesn’t really surprise us. It’s an easy win for the XUV700, as it clocks a sub-10s time for the 0-100kmph sprint. The margin becomes a little closer in the quarter mile test, but even still, the XUV700 has a near 1 second advantage there as well.

The XUV700 impressed in the braking test, stopping from 100kmph in a distance of 37.65 metres, compared to the Thar Roxx’s 42.12 metres.
Mahindra retails the XUV700 between Rs 13.98 lakh and Rs 26.04 lakh (ex-showroom).

Prices for the Thar Roxx’s four-wheel drive variants aren’t out yet, but the rear-wheel-drive variants are sold between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom). While the latter rivals other family SUVs like the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus, the off-roader Thar Roxx is an alternative Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Jimny.
