Mahindra has turned the spotlight back onto the beloved 3‑door Thar, as fresh camouflaged prototypes hit Indian roads. After nearly five years since its launch in 2020, it's clear the rugged off-roader is gearing up for a mid-life facelift.
Here’s what we could decode from the spy shots:
The test mule was draped in camouflage, but it didn’t hide everything. The Thar 3-door facelift seems to feature redesigned tail-lamps (possibly LED units), a revised rear bumper, and mildly tweaked fenders. While the basic silhouette remains as boxy and muscular as ever, with the spare wheel proudly mounted on the tailgate, the devil is clearly in the new details.
At the front, although heavily masked, changes could include new LED headlights, a revised grille, and a chunkier front bumper, borrowing cues from the Thar Roxx. The cladding around the wheel arches hints at subtle refinements to the stance.
The big updates, however, are expected inside. If the Thar Roxx is anything to go by, the facelifted 3-door Thar could finally move closer to the realm of modern and livable tech. Think dual 10.25-inch screens, one for infotainment, one for the digital driver’s display, along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as automatic climate control.
Other expected features include push-button start, keyless entry, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front-seat ventilation, a 360-degree camera, and possibly even a sunroof (asking too much?). Safety might also take a step up with six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and improved structural updates.
Under the hood, Mahindra isn’t likely to mess with a winning formula. The same 2-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines are expected to continue, paired with 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes for the 4x4 variants. Mahindra might move to the 4Xplore nomenclature following the family traditions (insert Vin Diesel family meme :p)
The entry-level 1.5-litre mHawk diesel for RWD variants may also continue for budget-conscious buyers.
While Mahindra has not confirmed anything officially, the facelifted Thar 3-door is expected to launch sometime in early 2026. With the addition of more tech and premium touches, expect a mild price bump over the current Rs 11.50 lakh to Rs 17.62 lakh (ex-showroom) range.
Once launched, the Thar 3-door facelift will square off against its usual suspects, the Force Gurkha (3-door) and the Maruti Jimny, while complementing the more urban-focused Thar 5-door Roxx. But with this update, Mahindra is clearly aiming to give buyers more reason to pick the three-door even in a world increasingly drawn to practicality.
