Japanese carmakers have offered their cars in India for many years, but there aren’t a lot of India-developed cars running around in the East Asian country. Now, a Mahindra Scorpio N has mysteriously been sighted in full camo in the Land of the Rising Sun, leading to plenty of speculations about its purpose and the probability of its launch in Japan.

Although the Indian carmaker’s Tech Mahindra division does exist in Japan, Mahindra doesn’t sell any cars there. It hasn’t announced any plans to export the SUV to Japan, either. The spied vehicle could have been a test mule that the carmaker is using as a test bed for future technologies.
Alternatively, the Scorpio N could have been imported by another carmaker to benchmark future products. With body-on-frame ICE vehicles slowly but steadily fading away from global markets, the Scorpio N is arguably one of the last few cutting-edge, ladder-frame SUVs around.
Without a word from the Indian carmaker about its overseas operations, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason for the Scorpio N’s sighting in Japan. That said, it is highly unlikely that the Scorpio N is being considered by Mahindra for market launch in Japan.
The Scorpio N is a well-equipped mid-size SUV that punches above its segment with its capability and features. It offers all the kit you’d expect from a brutish, ladder-frame SUV, including a sunroof, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12-speaker Sony 3D sound system, dual-zone AC and six airbags.
It comes with three engine options – a 132PS 2.2-litre diesel engine, the same engine with a 175PS tune; and a 200PS 2-litre turbo-petrol engine. It gets a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option of a six-speed automatic for the more powerful diesel and turbo-petrol engines. Also, the diesel variants have the option of a 4x4 system.
