The new-gen Ford Ranger has been spotted without any camouflage on our roads, bringing strong speculation that it could be launched in India

The new Ford Ranger was spotted undisguised in Chennai along with the new Endeavour, raising strong speculation that both models could be launched here, despite Ford refraining to comment on the same. The Ford Ranger is a popular pick-up truck sold worldwide and competes with other pick-up trucks like the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max V-Cross (on sale here), as well as the Chevrolet Colorado and Volkswagen Amarok (sold overseas). Here are 5 things to know  about the Ford Ranger:

Exterior

Both the Ford Endeavour and Ranger are built on the T6 ladder-on-frame chassis. Although the Endeavour (Everest in other countries) is designed as an SUV and measures slightly under 5 meters in length, the Ranger is about 5.4 meters long and is designed as a midsize pickup truck. While the majority of the looks are similar to the Endeavour, especially the front,  the profile and rear of the Ranger is far more imposing. The humongous flat-bed of the Ranger adds up to the sheer length of the vehicle and the back features a conventional pick-up truck style  door with LED tail lamps and embossed Ranger badging.

Interior

The interior design of the Ford Ranger largely resembles that of the Ford Endeavour as well. Notably, it features a brand new dashboard layout, along with a new steering wheel and centre console. One standout feature is the massive, vertically integrated 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. But being a pick-up truck, it misses out on third-row seating.

Engine

For the Australian market, the Ford Ranger is offered with 4 different engine options to choose from. The base variants get a 2-litre single turbo diesel engine producing 170 PS and 405 Nm, and can only be had in a 4x2 configuration. The second option is a 2-litre Bi-turbo diesel engine producing 210 PS and 500 Nm. This  engine can be opted for in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, depending on the variant you choose. For the higher variants of the Ranger, a 3-litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 250 PS and 600 Nm and a 3-litre V6 twin-turbo EcoBoost engine producing 397 PS and 583 Nm can be opted for. Notably, both the 3-litre engines are available only with 4-wheel-drive.

 Variants, Price and Rivals

For the international markets, the Ford Ranger is available in 7 different trims namely XL, XLS, XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, Platinum, and Raptor. It is yet to see which variants make it to India, provided that Ford is yet to give an official confirmation about its re-entry. The Ranger can be had in these 7 colour options - Arctic White, Aluminium Metallic, Meteor Grey, Shadow Black, Blue Lightning, Luxe Yellow, and Equinox Bronze.

Upon its launch, the Ranger will rival the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max V-Cross in India and expected pricing can be around Rs 50 lakh to Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
