KTM launches the more affordable 390 Adventure X at Rs 2.8 Lakh

While we’ve been waiting for the 390 Adventure with wire-spoke wheels and an adjustable front fork, KTM decided to surprise us with the uneXpected – 390 Adventure X – a variant nearly Rs 60k cheaper than the regular model. Of course, the massive drop in price comes with a few compromises but not where it matters. Here’s what’s new on the 390 Adventure X and how it’s different to the standard model.

What’s The Price? Who Are Its Rivals?

The KTM 390 Adventure X is priced at Rs 2,80,652, making it Rs 58,094 cheaper than the standard model, which is priced at Rs 3,38,746 (both ex-showroom Delhi). Now that’s a substantial reduction in the sticker price. At this price point it’s almost Rs 34k more expensive than the smaller 250 Adventure (Rs 2.46 lakh), and just as much more affordable than the BMW G 310 GS

Interestingly, at this price point, potential Royal Enfield Himalayan buyers (especially those who are opting for the top-end Sleet Black colour variant retailing at Rs 2.28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), can consider paying more and accessing almost twice the power.

How Many Variants Are There?

Currently in India, the 390 Adventure is offered in two variants - 390 Adventure (standard) and 390 Adventure X. If and when the wire-spoke rims and adjustable suspension version arrives, it could be the third, more off-road-focused variant to feature in this lineup.

What’s New?

Not much is new on the 390 Adventure X barring a few items like the 5-inch, grayscale, LCD instrument console (similar to the 250 Adventure), WP APEX USD big-piston forks (as opposed to WP APEX USD open-cartridge fork in the regular variant), MRF MoGrip Meteor tyres (as opposed to Metzeler Tourance rubber) and one new colour. The major difference between the standard model and the 390 Adventure X is the deprivation of electronics.

KTM will not be offering MTC (traction control), riding modes, cornering ABS, ride-by-wire and quickshifter plus. All you will get is off-road ABS, slipper clutch and 12V USB socket.  While KTM doesn't mention the X variant gets ride-by-wire, we still think it will. Finally, the 390 Adventure X comes in Galactic Blue and Dark Galvano Black as opposed to the standard variant, which comes in Atlantic Blue & Dark Galvano Black.

What’s thankfully unchanged is the essence of the 390 Adventure. The motor and the bike’s performance and styling remain unchanged, hence what you get is a barebone 390 Adventure with all the thrills but no frills. The 390 Adventure X’s 373cc makes 43.5PS and 37Nm–just the same as the standard variant.

What Should Have Been Changed?

If KTM is looking to make its flagship ADV more accessible, it could have gone with a lower seat option which would have invited more riders to the brand. The saddle height is still at 855mm, which is 55mm more than say the Royal Enfield Himalayan, which stands at 800mm seat height.

ZigSays:

It’s incredible how KTM has managed to reduce nearly Rs 60K by taking away electronic aids, downgrading to MRF tyres and making minor changes to the front fork setup. At this price point the 390 Adventure comes right back into the value-for-money space, a position KTM dominated until prices for all its 390s went up considerably in the recent past.
