This generation update for the LX comes after 14 years. So it’s quite evident that there is more than what meets the eye

After a hiatus of around 14 years, Lexus has taken the wraps off the new 2022 LX, which is nothing, but a more opulent version of the new-gen Land Cruiser. The SUV could be on cards for an India launch considering that its predecessor is still on sale in the country. Considering that the SUV is getting a massive update after 14 years, it’s quite natural that there’s more than what meets the eye. So here are five things you need to know about the Lexus LX:

It’s Undergone A Heavy Weight Loss

The new Lexus LX is based on Toyota’s new GA-F body-on-frame platform, which is around 200kgs lighter than before. Lexus has achieved that by constructing select components like the roof, hood, and tailgate using aluminium. And despite the lighter weight, Lexus claims the platform is 20 percent more rigid than before.

A Properly Opulent Interior

The third-gen Land Cruiser took a big jump up in interior ambience, and the new LX takes it a step further. The design might seem simple, but the cabin seems to be built using high quality soft touch plastics and leather upholstery.

Fun Fact: The LX’s starter button has an authentication sensor, where you can only start it up only if the fingerprint matches.

The highlight, though, is Lexus’ new twin screen setup in the centre console, featuring a 12.3-inch unit on the top and 7-inch unit below it. The top one controls the infotainment system and feeds the view of the 360-degree camera while the smaller screen shows offroad data and climate control functions.

This is also the first time the Lexus LX can be specced as a four-seater, with the focus mainly on rear occupants. You are treated to two large chairs that can be adjusted each and every way. Rear passengers also get features like separate zones of climate control, twin entertainment screens, cup holders, and a wireless phone charger.

Typical Lexus Design, More Refined Now!

The LX is an upright boxy SUV in comparison to its sleeker German and British rivals. So it’s quite evident that it might look similar to its predecessor, but all body panels have been redesigned. Lexus has spruced it up with a larger spindle grille that dominates the fascia, flanked by sleek LED headlamps. The SUV has smooth flowing lines while the large squared-out wheel arches are nicely filled by 22-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, it gets new connected LED tail lamps and ‘LEXUS’ badging instead of the logo.

A Downsized Engine, But Better Off Road Capabilities

Gone is the macho 367PS V8 and in comes a smaller and more powerful 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 unit belting out 415PS of power and 650Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels via an 10-speed automatic transmission, which is capable of changing more than one gear depending on the load.

The LX has tough off-roading genes and carries forward all the upgrades made to the Land Cruiser LC300. But there’s more. The highlight is the adaptive height adjustable suspension, which changes the ride height based on the terrain. Then there’s the multi-terrain mode -- Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock -- that alters various parameters of the vehicle.

Electronic differential lock has been provided on both axles while crawl control ensures you can change the vehicle’s crawling speed without throttle or accelerator inputs.

India Launch And Rivals

The LX could be on the cards for an India launch, considering that its successor is still on sale here. It will lock horns with the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, Audi Q8, and the upcoming facelifted Land Rover Discovery
