Tesla Model Y Spied Testing In India: Launch Closer Than Ever?

Is it the time when we finally start seeing Teslas on Indian roads?

It seems like Tesla is finally moving past memes and whispers in India. The Tesla Model Y with a facelift, internally code-named as Project Juniper, has been spotted testing on Indian roads, and this isn't some inventory leftover that is being brought over here. This is the newest iteration of the Model Y, all wrapped up in camouflage and obviously undergoing local testing. The sighting on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway suggests serious intent from the EV giant, with indications favouring a full-fledged launch instead of testing the waters.

What's New With The Tesla Model Y Facelift?

Tesla facelifts are not your typical bumper-and-headlight work, they're efficient and aerodynamic. This time, the Model Y appears to have drawn design cues from its cousin, the refreshed Model 3 Highland. The headlights appear to be much sleeker and now include a split LED design, which lends the front fascia a sharper and more modern look. The front bumper seems to have been restyled for improved aerodynamics, while the alloy wheels are of an updated design, perhaps helping improve efficiency too.

Towards the back, the tail-lamps have become a connected full-width light bar, with some added visual drama and a hint of cyberpunk cool. Tesla has also quietly tweaked the overall aerodynamic design of the car, which in turn will be expected to improve its range and efficiency.

Performance And Range: The Numbers Speak

Internationally, the Model Y facelift comes in two primary variants: a rear-wheel-drive and a long-range dual-motor all-wheel-drive. The RWD model provides a claimed range of up to 719 km (according to China's CLTC cycle), while the AWD Long Range variant provides approximately 662 km.

Acceleration figures are impressive as well, from 0 to 100 kmph is taken in just 5.9 seconds for the RWD model and a quicker 4.3 seconds for the AWD version.

Both models come equipped with 250 kW DC fast charging, which allows you to charge around 250 km of range in mere 15 minutes using compatible charging points. These specs are likely to remain largely unchanged for India, but we’ll have to wait for official details to be certain.

Tesla’s India Strategy: Finally Gaining Momentum

Behind the scenes, Tesla has been slowly but surely putting the pieces in place. The company has secured a location for its first showroom and service centre in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex, and both the Model Y and Model 3 have been spotted undergoing homologation testing in India over the past few months.

Although the initial launch is likely to occur via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) channel, local assembly or even contract manufacturing is planned in the future. Tesla is said to be negotiating with different Indian suppliers and has shown interest in fulfilling the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) requirements.

The recent adjustments of India's import duties on EVs, reduced to 15 percent for EVs over USD 35,000 if the business invests in domestic production, further pave the way for Tesla to make an economically viable entry.

Expected Timeline And Pricing

Based on the recent testing activity, it's probable that Tesla might open bookings for the Model Y in India by the end of 2024, with deliveries starting in early 2025. When it comes to pricing, don't expect Tesla to go bargain hunting.

Despite lower duties, the Model Y will still be priced in the Rs 55 lakh to Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom) range, based on variant and actual import expenses. It will not be an affordable car by any means, but it will appeal to a niche group of tech-literate, green-conscious buyers who've been patiently waiting for that Tesla badge to appear on their driveway.

ZigSays….

The fact that Tesla is only piloting the updated Model Y facelift, and not some older iteration, indicates the firm is planning on a proper premium launch, not merely a token existence. With its refreshed styling, increased range, tech-upgrade interior, and the allure of Tesla's OTA-based ecosystem, the Model Y facelift might prove a serious contender for India's evolving luxury EV landscape.

Whether it's the performance, the amenities, or simply the sheer brand gravitas, Tesla finally appears to be set to juice into India's EV storyline, and this time it's looking genuine.
