Tesla had started its India innings with the Model Y, last year and now the carmaker has launched the Model Y L in India at Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Model Y L is slightly longer, which allows it to have a third row as well as a 6-seater configuration. This version of the SUV was first conceived for the Chinese market, but given its versatility, it could turn out to be a suitable product for India as well. Here is a detailed look at it:
Tesla has launched the Model Y L in a single Premium variant at a price of Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). With this pricing, it now sits in the middle of the Model Y lineup between the Model Y Standard-range and Model Y Long-range variants.

The exterior of the Model Y L remains visually similar to the standard Model Y, but with a few changes to accommodate the third row of seating. Up front it gets a near-identical fascia with the connected LED light bar spanning across the width of the car, and the inconspicuous horizontal headlamp cluster.

In profile is where things get more interesting, and the longer wheelbase is apparent in its silhouette. Furthermore, it gets a taller roofline with a larger quarter window and a ‘hunchback’ shape that differs from the standard car’s sportier stance. It also gets a new design for the 19-inch alloy wheels with wheel covers.

Changes to the rear-end styling include a taller and more upright stance owing to the roofline as mentioned before. You also have a more pronounced bootlid spoiler which gives it stronger road presence.

The Model Y L can be had in 6 exterior colour options: Stealth Grey, Pearl White, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Ultra Red and Cosmic Silver.
Inside, you get a more spacious cabin with the Model Y L and a 6-seater layout. However, just like other Tesla models, the Model Y L also comes with a very minimalistic cabin design. The dashboard has a very clean look, with all controls being integrated into the central 16-inch touchscreen. You also get a large panoramic glass roof that makes the cabin feel airy and bright.

You can configure the Model Y L with an all-black interior or a dual-tone grey and black colour scheme inside.
The Model Y L’s equipment list includes a 19-speaker sound system, powered, heated and ventilated first abd second row seats, 16-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers, power-folding second and third row seats, power-adjustable AC vents, powered tailgate, air purifier, heated steering wheel, wireless phone chargers and ambient lighting.

Safety tech onboard includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors. It also gets an advanced ADAS suite, and you can also opt for the Fully Self Driving (FSD) capabilities for an additional Rs 6 lakh, which will be activated in the future with a software update.
Tesla has not specified the battery capacity of the Model Y L, but it is claimed to do a WLTP-claimed range of 681 km. It also gets a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup that can propel the car from 0-100 kmph within 5 seconds. Here are its detailed specifications:
|
Claimed Range (WLTP) |
681 km |

Dual-motor All-wheel drive |

|
Top speed |
201 Kmph |
Tesla also claims the Model Y L can add up to 288 km of range in 15 minutes of fast charging using its Supercharger network.
The Tesla Model Y L rivals luxury electric SUVs like the BYD Sealion 7, BMW iX1, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the Volvo EC40.
The Tesla Model Y has been the world's best-selling car for the past few years, and there’s a clear reason for it, too. The new Model Y L just strengthens the qualities you had with one additional row of seats, but that makes quite a difference. The Model Y L was probably the car Tesla should have considered bringing to India first, had it not been globally revealed after the Model Y was launched in India.
