Mahindra To Manufacture Upcoming Electric SUVs From New Plant In Pune

The Scorpio maker will invest Rs 10,000 crore for its EV business

  • The new plant will be used for the development and manufacturing of the electric XUV e8, XUV e9 and ‘Born Electric’ (BE) SUVs.
  • Mahindra’s upcoming electric SUV lineup includes the all-electric XUV700, its coupe version and three BE models.
  • XUV e8 will be the first one of the lot to go on sale by 2024-end.

Mahindra has announced an investment of Rs 10,000 crore for its new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Pune, Maharashtra. The new plant will be used for the development and production of its upcoming Born Electric  (BE) vehicles and the electric version of the XUV700, called the XUV e8. The SUV maker will invest the total amount over a period of seven to eight years and this plant will operate in addition to the ones already present in Pune and Nashik. 

Mahindra unveiled five electric SUV concepts on August 15, 2022, including a regular electric and an electric coupe version of the XUV700, called the XUV e8 and XUV e9, respectively, and three new BE SUVs. The electric-only SUVs further consist of a Creta-sized compact SUV, a Harrier-size midsize SUV and an XUV700-sized full-size SUV. The electric XUV700 or XUV e8 will be the first one among the EVs to be rolled out in 2024, while the BE models are expected to arrive by the far end of 2025.

Underpinning these electric vehicles will be Mahindra’s all-new INGLO modular platform, which will also borrow some components from Volkswagen’s MEB platform. The new platform can accommodate 60kWh and 80kWh battery packs, with a WLTP-certified range of up to 450 kilometres for the larger pack. Both batteries will boast of a fast-charging capacity of up to 175kW. Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drivetrains will also be offered, with up to 394PS (in the AWD). 

Meanwhile, Mahindra is prepping up for the launch of the XUV400 EV, which is expected to go on sale in January 2023. With a 39.4kWh battery pack, the electric SUV  has a claimed range of up to 450 kilometres. It will rival the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and will be an affordable alternative to the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric
