Latest Updates on R15 V4
Yamaha launched the 2024 Yamaha R15M and it comes with a brand new colour scheme along with new features. Here’s everything you need to know. Just a few days after, the manufacturer launched the 2024 Monster Energy MotoGP Edition of the R15M.
Expert's Opinion on R15 V4
Overview

- The Yamaha R15 is an iconic motorcycle which brought the supersport craze to India
- It was first launched in 2008, and has had a cult-following ever since
- But does it have what it takes to stand out in the current market? Here’s what we think
Design

- The R15 V4 has a very aggressive supersport design and styling, which takes inspiration from Yamaha’s higher capacity bikes like the R7
- The gold-finished inverted fork on select colours also adds a bit more premiumness to the bike overall
- The sharp looking rear section gives the bike a very sporty character
- The halogen turn-indicators that stick out of the fairing takes away from the bike’s premium look and feel
Performance & Mileage

- The Yamaha R15’s 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine outputs 18.4PS and 14.2Nm, and offers linear acceleration and power delivery
- The engine is quite rev happy and most of the power and torque is produced at the higher rpm. This makes it really nice to ride on the twisties and also on the track
- The quickshifter is quite smooth and easy to use
- Offers a tested mileage of 55.20kmpl on the city
- Doesn’t have much power and torque at the lower rev ranges, and the engine only feels alive once it revs above 7,000rpm
Handling

- The bike feels quite at place in the twisties and tips into corners effortlessly
- The suspension is set towards the stiffer side and this helps in improving the bike’s sporty handling characteristic
- Feels quite agile and the smaller profile makes it easier to manoeuvre through city traffic
- Braking hardware could have been better and offered a bit stronger initial bite
Ride Quality

- The stiffer suspension does manage to soak up most bumps and potholes on the road and is reasonable for a supersport
Comfort & Storage

- The clip-ons are slightly raised so riders won’t have to lean in too much to get the optimal riding posture
- The tank panels also make it easier to hold the bike with one’s knees during cornering
- The riding posture is still quite sporty and many riders will struggle with it
Features

- The negatively-lit LCD instrument console offers smartphone connectivity and related features such call/SMS alerts and turn-by-turn navigation
- The console has a clean layout and tachometer layout makes the bike feel like real sports bike
Verdict

- The Yamaha R15 stands out as a really good entry level supersport, which manages to offer good looks and performance. The refined nature of the engine, and linear power delivery makes the bike a good choice for beginners. The bike also has a few practical features which will make it quite good in the city. Overall, the bike will be perfect for those riders who are looking for their first supersport on which they can improve their riding skills. More experienced riders on the other hand will be better off with a higher capacity bike which can offer greater performance.
Key Things to Know about R15 V4
- The design language, inspired by Yamaha's larger sport bikes, will surely appeal to enthusiasts
- Features a lightweight chassis that makes it easy to handle
- 155cc motor in the bike is the most powerful one in the segment and gets VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology, making it an extremely usable engine at both low and high speeds
- Despite its sporty performance, the R15 offers decent mileage, making it usable for daily commuting
- The top-spec M variant is the only bike in the segment to get a quickshifter
- The aggressive riding position may not be suitable for all riders, especially for long-duration rides
- The rear seat is also small and lacks sufficient cushioning, making it uncomfortable for the pillion
- Misses out on turn-by-turn navigation
The Yamaha R15 V4 is the perfect first motorcycle for budding sportbike enthusiasts. Its forgiving nature and great everyday usability make it an excellent choice for beginners to hone their skills before upgrading to bigger, faster sportbikes.
