Expert's Opinion on MT-15
Overview

The Dark Side Of Japan
- The Yamaha MT-15 stands out as the Yamaha R15’s streetfighter sibling. It is powered by the same 155cc engine, but gets a different design and styling along with some changes to its performance. Here’s what we think about the bike
Design

A transformer on two wheels!
- The Yamaha MT-15 stands out with an aggressive design and styling. Its headlight section, resembles a transformer’s face
- The tank extensions are quite aggressive and makes the bike look quite aggressive
- The pillion seat is a bit too small and the tail tidy feels too long relative to the body. Doesn’t fit in well with the overall design
Performance & Mileage

More than an R15
- The 155cc motor has adequate torque across the rev range thanks to Yamaha’s variable valve actuation technology (VVA)
- The engine is quite tractable and can move at low speeds of 24kmph at 6th gear
- The engine is very refined and there are very little vibrations present.
- The engine lacks bottom end torque and this is a bit of a let down when riding in city traffic. The engine only feels alive once its rev past 5500rpm
Handling

Even better than the R15?
- The bike is very agile and tips into corners easily
- The small profile makes it easy to cut through traffic
- The light weight also makes it easy to move the bike around in the parking lot as well
- Braking performance leaves a lot to be desired. The front disc doesn’t have the kind of initial bite you’d expect
- The rear brake doesn’t offer much feel, and it's hard to press the lever a bit too hard.
Ride Quality

Stiffer than a rock
- Has a stable front-end and is easy to tip into corners
- Is nimble in traffic
- The suspension setup is set towards the stiffer side. The bike is not able to sock up most of the bumps and potholes you’d encounter on road
Comfort & Storage

The best for the rider but not the pillion
- The seat is decently comfortable and can accommodate city riding
- The rider seat also has a lot of space and it’s easy to move around and adjust the riding position for a more upright or more sporty one.
- The relaxed and upright riding posture is a lot more comfortable than the committed on of the Yamaha R15
- The seat cushioning is not the best and it gets uncomfortable when riding for longer durations. This is annoying when touring for longer distances
- The pillion seat is a bit too small and is quite uncomfortable
Features

Has the bare minimum
- The bike gets a negatively-lit LCD console which has a clean layout and offers good visibility in most lighting conditions
- The tachometer layout makes it feel like a proper race bike, which is something I appreciate
- The bike gets smartphone connectivity via the Yamaha Y-Connect app for call/SMS alerts
- Misses out on turn-by-turn navigation which many of its rivals get
Verdict

Should you buy the Yamaha MT-15?
- The Yamaha MT-15 is a really good entry-level streetfighter. The well refined engine, combined with the bike’s amazing handling, makes it one worth considering if you’re looking for a good beginner bike. It is also the perfect alternative for those looking for R15 like performance in a more ergonomic package. The MT-15 has all the essential features you’d expect from a bike of its class, and the only issue is that it misses out on turn-by-turn navigation which could have enhanced the riding experience to a great extent.
Key Things to Know about MT-15
Upside
- Agile handling, Light kerb weight, Excellent performance
Downside
- Weak headlight, Cramped pillion space, A little pricey
Expert's Conclusion
The Yamaha MT-15 ticks all the right boxes when it comes to being a nimble, performance-packed motorcycle that’s at home in the city and also the occasional highway rides. If you can overlook the cramped pillion space, the MT-15 makes for a great allrounder.
