Don't want a diesel? No problem. We compile a list of the top five most fuel-efficient petrol-powered cars in India.

Save Fuel

There is no doubt that diesel cars are more fuel-efficient when compared to petrol-powered wagons. But, diesel-powered cars are considerably more expensive to buy than their corresponding petrol-powered variants. With the fuel price difference between diesel and petrol shrinking below Rs 10, a petrol-powered car makes more sense for people who do not have the running to justify the savings with a diesel car. These are the cars that make the list of the top five most fuel-efficient petrol-powered cars in India based on ARAI (Automotive Research Authority of India) figures.

Renault KWID

Renault Kwid 799cc (Mileage – 25.17kmpl): Renault India’s bestselling car is also India’s most fuel-efficient petrol car. With the 1.0-litre variant of the Kwid drawing attention lately, the 799cc model is still one of the “want one” cars by the masses. Its 3-pot 0.8-litre petrol motor churns out 54PS of power and 72Nm of torque. It comes in five variants. Prices start from Rs 2.62 lakh for the STD variant, to Rs 3.67 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi) for the RXT trim which comes with an airbag on the driver side. The Kwid is the only car in its segment to come with a touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument panel.

Datsun Redigo

Datsun redi-Go (Mileage – 25.17kmpl): This car is equipped with the same engine as the Renault Kwid. The tuning of the engine is at par with that of its corporate sibling. So, you get the same power figures and the same fuel economy. The redi-Go is on sale with five variants to choose from. The base variant D is priced at Rs 2.38 lakh and the top-spec S variant is available for Rs 3.34 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes it the least expensive car with the best fuel economy figures in India.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 (Mileage – 24.7kmpl): To become India’s bestselling car, it has to come with quite a recipe. It has to be cheap to buy, cheap to run and easy to maintain. That’s exactly what the Alto 800 has in its equation. It is backed by Maruti’s iconic service network and is easy on the pocket. It comes with a 3-cylinder 800cc engine which produces 48PS of power and 69Nm of torque. There are eight variants with the petrol engine to choose from. The base STD version is priced at Rs 2.45 lakh and the top-spec VXI (O) variant fetches Rs 3.34 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki Alto K1

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 (Mileage – 24.07kmpl): The Alto 800’s elder sibling (engine-wise) also cracks the list of top five most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India. Compared to the 800 variant of the Alto, the K10 is more powerful and comes with more creature comfort features like front fog lamps, tachometer, bigger tyres, anti-theft alarm and seatbelt warning. The entry level variant LX of the K10 is priced at Rs 3.25 lakh and the top-spec VXI (O) with manual transmission has a price tag of Rs 3.82 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi).

Tata Tiago

Tata Tiago (Mileage – 23.84kmpl): Tata’s newest offering, the Tiago has been received well by the market. Its design, peppy engine and bucket full of creature comfort gadgets makes it one of the best value for money purchases in the country. To add that icing on the cake, the petrol-powered Tiago is also one of the most frugal offerings in the market. It is powered by a 3-pot 1.2-litre petrol engine which churns out 85PS of power and 114Nm of torque. These figures make the Tiago the most powerful hatchback in this economy-minded list. The base model XB is priced at Rs 3.20 lakh and the top-end variant XZ comes listed with Rs 4.81 lakh price tag (both ex-showroom Delhi).

Car manufacturers are now designing their cars in such a way that they meet most of the demands put forward by the customer. Diesel is the cheaper of the two compared to petrol but the bestselling car in the country, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, is not powered by a diesel motor. It is the whole package that counts. Some might trade performance for resale value and some might do it the other way around. The final choice will differ from customer to customer because every customer will have a different priority list in the car as a package. In whatever order the list may be, fuel economy always makes it to the top three for customers running on a tight budget. That is where these cars come in. They are cheap to buy, easy to run and easier to maintain.
