The carmaker is also testing Model S prototypes ahead of the Nurburgring lap record attempt this weekend

  • A modified Model S is rumored to have already beaten the Porsche Taycan’s time by 19 seconds.
  • Modifications include a major powertrain upgrade, a revised front end, and fender flares covering wider tyres.
  • Tesla is also evaluating prototype Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R or Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport RS tyres for the record run.

Tesla has been quite hard at work at the Nurburgring circuit this week. It has been testing various prototypes of the Model S to prepare for the attempt to beat the Porsche Taycan’s lap record at the ‘Ring. And now, the company has installed a supercharger station at the circuit, which hints that Tesla will be hanging around the circuit for sometime.

Tesla posted a picture of a blue Model S connected to the supercharger on Twitter and it has confirmed that the stall is not temporary. However, the new station is yet to be added on Tesla’s map, with the closest supercharger station being over 50km away from the ‘Ring. In that sense, it does make sense for Tesla to install the supercharger closer to the circuit if it is planning on further testing.

Tesla’s interest at tackling the Nurburgring started in early September when CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the Model S would take a shot at the record after the Porsche Taycan set the four-door production record. This essentially led to a cheeky Twitter war between the two carmakers and finally Tesla looks to take back the EV crown with this record attempt.

Reports suggest that on Tuesday, Tesla may have already snatched the four-door EV record from the Taycan as a modified Model S has unofficially lapped the track in 7:23 seconds, making it 19 seconds quicker than the Porsche Taycan. The rumored gains in the modified Model S include a major powertrain upgrade, a revised front end, and flared wheel arches covering wider tyres. Spy shots also suggest that Tesla is evaluating the prototype Model S with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R or Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport RS tyres for the record run.

Everything will be revealed this weekend, once Tesla officially lays down the marker for the Model S around the Nurburgring. Even if it does break the record, Porsche still has another trick up its sleeve with the Taycan Turbo S. There is much anticipation over which of the two come out on top.
