Both cars get revised mechanicals and a turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 114PS of power!

Tata Motors has launched the performance-oriented version of the Tiago hatchback and the Tigor sub-4 metre sedan in the country. With an introductory pricing of Rs 6.39 lakh and Rs 7.49 lakh, (ex-showroom Delhi) the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP are Rs 1.17 lakh and Rs 1.0 lakh more expensive than the respective top-spec variants they are based on. The Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP are the result of a collaboration between Tata Motors and Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives and is targeted towards enthusiasts. In fact, they are now the most affordable 110PS+ cars on sale in the country now! The JTP editions of the cars get a host of changes, both mechanical as well as cosmetic. Let’s take a quick look at what they pack.

Tata Tiago Tigor JTP Twins Launched
  • A 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor from the Nexon that’s been tuned to produce 114PS of power and 150Nm of torque. The Nexon is rated at 110PS and 170Nm
  • A host of cosmetic add-ons, including blacked-out headlamps, sporty bumpers and side skirts, a chrome plated exhaust tip and an off-set air intake on the bonnet, among others
  • On the inside, it features an all-black theme with red accents for a sporty touch

What’s under the bonnet?

As we mentioned before, the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP are powered by the Nexon’s 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. However, it’s now tuned to produce 114PS of power (+4PS) and 150Nm of torque (-20Nm). Mated to a 5-speed manual, Tata claims the Tiago JTP can get from 0 to 100kmph in 9.95 seconds while the Tigor JTP takes 10.38 seconds, which is plenty quick for a sub-Rs 10 lakh car. Of course, we’ll be putting these claims to the test soon. So stay tuned.

Will it be sporty?

If the power and torque figure hasn’t convinced you by now, this surely will. Tata says the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP get a revised suspension setup which should offer better handling and, of course, a stiffer ride in all probability. Both cars now sit lower to the ground as well, 166mm when compared to the regular models’ 170mm.

While we would have liked disc brakes all around, Tata has stuck the same front disc and rear drum setup as the regular models.

The Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP looks a whole lot meaner than their standard counterparts thanks to sporty bumpers front and rear, a larger air dam, contrast-coloured ORVM covers, sharper creases and the offset air intake on the bonnet. It also gets ‘JTP’ badges on the grille, side apron and the boot lid as well as 15-inch machine-finished alloy wheels. At the rear, both cars get a chrome-tipped twin exhaust that look sweet.

Step inside, and you’ll notice the red accents around the AC vents as well as the contrast stitching on the steering wheels, seats and gearshift gaiter. The shiny metal pedals lend that final sporty touch inside the cabin.

What about equipment?

What are my other options?

Well, as we said before, these two cars are the most affordable way to get into the 110PS club in India. However, if you can stretch your budget a little, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI. The only compact sedan which could be considered as an option, but not a proper rival, is the Ford Aspire petrol automatic which is powered by the larger 1.5-litre unit.

We’ve driven both the cars and will share our views on it shortly. So stay tuned!
