Earlier this year, we saw the Lamborghini Huracan Performante lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 52.01 seconds to create a record. We were impressed. Now, nearly 7 months later, that record has already been broken. Conquering the 'Ring' in 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. We are impressed again.
It's not that we are easy to impress, but these are genuinely staggering timings. The Nordschleife ring is 20.7km long and for a production car to lap it in under 7 minutes, it has to be mind-numbingly fast. The GT2 RS maintained an average speed of 184.11kmph through the lap. The lab coats at Porsche set out to beat the older record of the GT2 RS of fewer than 7 minutes and 5 seconds and ended up shattering that time by 17.7 seconds.
The record was set by Lars Kern, a Porsche test driver who competes in the Carrera Cup Australia and the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and hence, knows the Nordschleife inside out. Powering the Porsche GT2 RS is a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat six motor pumping out 700PS of power and 750Nm of torque. The entire thing weighs just 1,470 kg with a tank full of fuel. As a result, the car propels from 0 to 100kmph in 2.8 seconds. Mind that it is a rear-wheel drive coupe and has a top speed of 340kmph. During the record, the car was running on Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres.
Now that you know some stuff about the car, we have a treat for you. Check out the insane lap of the Porsche GT2 RS. Headphones recommended.
