After Acing BNCAP, Maruti Suzuki Victoris Scores 5 Stars In Global NCAP As Well!

The Maruti Victoris is in the news for all the good reasons. Having emerged as one of the select few SUVs that achieved a perfect 5-star rating under Bharat NCAP, it has now set the same example for the Global NCAP's recent crash tests as well. The Victoris earned a whopping 33.72 points out of a possible 34 for protection of adults and 41 out of 49 for child occupant protection.

This double victory, initially in Bharat NCAP and now in Global NCAP, provides Maruti a strong counterpoint to decades of verbal sparring about safety. It also sets a new standard for the brand, with the newly tested eVitara, which scored 4 stars in Euro NCAP, noting that safety is consistent across the lineup.

Adult Occupant Protection

Score: 33.72/34 - As Good As It Gets

The Victoris passed the frontal offset crash test, providing good protection to the passenger's and driver's head, neck, knees, and tibias, with only the driver's chest featuring "adequate" rather than "good." Notably, the bodyshell and footwell received a stable rating, which means that the SUV is of sound structure and can absorb extra loads.

The side impact test had the head, pelvis, and abdomen graded "good," with the chest registering "adequate" protection. Even in the more challenging side pole test, protection levels were high across the board. 

In Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP as well, the Victoris has demonstrated that it's not only pursuing scores, but it has the body to support those numbers. For consumers, this translates into faith not only on paper, but in everyday crash conditions as well.

Child Occupant Protection

Score: 41/49 - Near Flawless

Rear-facing 18-month-old and 3-year-old dummies were tested in the Victoris using ISOFIX with support legs, and both provided maximum protection in frontal and side collisions. All Victoris come equipped with 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, which increases family safety further.

One limitation is the lack of a passenger airbag deactivation switch, which restricts rear-facing child seat installation in the front passenger position. Still, the CRS installation assessment passed in all available seating positions.

Bharat NCAP had already proven the Victoris’ family-friendly credentials, and now Global NCAP confirms it. If you’re buying primarily as a family car, the Victoris is as good as it gets in this price band.

Safety Assist And Tech 

In terms of tech, the Victoris introduces a relatively sophisticated package:

• 6 Airbags as standard

• ABS & ESC as standard

• Seatbelt reminders for all

• Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) in ADAS variants 

• Lane Keep Assist in ADAS variants and more

UN127 pedestrian protection regulation compliance.

Adaptive Cruise Control and inter-urban AEB at higher speeds are missing; however, these features are now being introduced by some competitors.

Pedestrian Protection 

The Victoris adheres to UN127 pedestrian protection norms, such that its body styling is optimised to mitigate pedestrian injury upon impact.

Though this doesn't always find its way into the advertising brochures, it's a significant move, particularly in India, where pedestrian safety tends to be overlooked.

What Rivals And What Price? 

It is expected to be priced in the Rs 10–18 lakh range (ex-showroom). The Victoris will go up against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Toyota Hyryder, and MG Astor.

No one among these competitors, to date, is able to claim a clean sweep of 5-star ratings in both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP. Tata and Mahindra SUVs have had the "safest" label for some time now, but with the Victoris, Maruti has finally issued a serious gauntlet.
