Crash safety is becoming a serious talking point in India, with carmakers now lining up their latest SUVs for Bharat NCAP tests. The newest addition to the 5-star roster is Maruti’s Victoris, joining a growing lineup of SUVs that have impressed in both adult and child protection. In this report we take a look at five SUVs offered in the Indian market that have secured full five star rating in BNCAP crash tests.
Leading the pack is Mahindra’s flagship electric SUV coupe, the XEV 9e. It achieved a full 32 on 32 score for adult occupant protection and 45/49 for child safety, giving it a total of 77/81 points. Up until now, this is the highest score yet under Bharat NCAP crash tests. Safety equipment in the XEV 9e include 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, all-wheel disc brakes, a 360-degree camera, blind-view monitor, and Level 2 ADAS with features like lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Tata’s Harrier EV has carried forward the brand’s strong safety reputation to its electric offerings as well. Like its rival, the Harrier EV has a 32 on 32 for adult protection and 45/49 for child safety, taking its total to 77/81. Safety-wise, the Harrier EV packs in 6 airbags as standard, electric stability control, hill-start assist, a 360-degree camera, and advanced driver aids.

Part of the brand's Born Electric lineup, the Mahindra BE 6 has also secured five star rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests. The electric SUV has scored a 31.97 out of 32 for adult protection and 45 out of 49 for child safety, adding up to 76.97/81 overall. On the safety front, it features 7 airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise control.

The Maruti Victoris is the latest SUV to secure a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, scoring 31.66/32 for adult protection and 43/49 for child safety. It is the second compact SUV by Maruti in our market, after the Grand Vitara, and it features more safety equipment than its sibling. The Victoris comes equipped with Level-2 ADAS along with other safety features like 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, ISOFIX child seat mounts, 3-point seatbelts for all seats, hill-hold assist, traction control, and a 360-degree camera.

Rounding off the list is Tata’s most affordable electric SUV, the Punch EV. With its compact size, the Punch EV has scored 31.46/32 for adult protection and 45/49 for child safety. Safety-wise, six airbags are standard, while other features in the Punch EV include ABS with EBD, hill-start assist, hill-hold control, a 360-degree camera, and all-wheel disc brakes.

These five SUVs highlight how crash safety is no longer limited to a particular segment. From the compact Tata Punch EV to larger electric SUVs like the Mahindra XEV 9e, the 5-star club in BNCAP crash tests now has a wide range of SUVs. Let us know in the comments, which of the above mentioned SUVs you did not expect to see on the list.
