The SUV will be powered solely by a 2.2-litre diesel engine in 140PS tune

  • The Scorpio BS6 will be available in four variants: S5, S7, S9, and S11.
  • The diesel engine continues to produce 140PS/320Nm mated to a 5-speed (S5) and 6-speed manual gearbox (S7, S9, and S11).
  • However, the SUV now misses out on the 4x4 option.
  • We expect the price to start from around Rs 15 lakh.

Our last brush with the BS6 Scorpio was when we spied it being tested on our roads. We had then reported that the SUV will continue to be powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine. From what appears now, that has turned out to be true. We’ve got almost all the details on the BS6 Scorpio except for the price, which we believe will be out soon.

The heart of the matter, the 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk diesel engine, still retains its 140PS/320Nm output figures. But Mahindra is only offering the engine in this one state of tune and has discontinued the 120PS/280Nm version of the engine.

Mahindra has also rejigged the variants for the Scorpio. The SUV is now offered in four variants: S5, S7, S9, and S11, with the omission of S3 variant. That said, similar to the BS4 version, the SUV will still be offered in different seating options:  7-, 8- and 9-seater configurations.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox in variants such as the S7, S9, and S11 while the S5 gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the biggest miss is undoubtedly the deletion of 4X4 option from Scorpio.

Nevertheless, the Scorpio carries forward features such as the cruise control, rear parking camera and automatic climate control and auto headlamps. Some safety kit on offer are dual front airbags, speed alert, ABS, rear parking sensors, and front seatbelt reminder.

At present, the Scorpio in its BS4 guise is priced from Rs 10.19 lakh to Rs 16.83 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The BS6 version is bound to come with a premium and since there is no base S3 variant anymore, expect the price to commence from around Rs 15 lakh. The next-generation Scorpio is out testing on our roads and is expected to debut in 2021. Key rivals include the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.
