This new SUV concept could be just what Honda needs to tackle the uber competitive sub-4m SUV segment in India

At the 2021 GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), Honda’s showstopper was a new kid on the block in the form of the SUV RS concept. At a glance, it seems to have all the cool bits to consider it as not only a possible WR-V successor, but also a Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza rival. Here’s what makes this SUV RS concept special from the usual Honda SUV philosophy in detailed images:

The biggest thing we noticed in the SUV RS concept is undoubtedly the sporty design philosophy it's got with strong character lines as well as sharp edges all over.

Up front, you’re treated to a pretty sleek grille that has a nicely stacked mesh pattern which is definitely preferred over a big fat chrome strip present in recent Honda offerings. Complemented by a sharp set of LED headlights, the face seems to be slightly inspired by the fifth-gen Honda City.

What also makes it unique over its more upright rivals is a sloping roofline which, considering it is an RS badged model, gets a thumbs up from this author.

Head over to the side, and the SUV RS concept features a chunky and blacked-out set of alloys. The black cladding on the wheel arches, and a splash of red on the side skirts, give the SUV a strong presence, despite its compact dimensions.

The rear end of the SUV looks quite busy and modern with the chunky cladding on the rear bumper. The sleek nature up front continues at the back, with a pair of slim, connected taillights spanning the width of the SUV’s boot.

We’re yet to have a look inside the SUV RS concept, but we think it’ll be loaded with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, a sunroof, and cruise control.

Also expect the production-spec model, when it goes on sale in Indonesia, to be equipped with the Honda Sensing range of driver assists. For reference, the new BR-V gets Honda’s ORVM-mounted LaneWatch cameras,  lane departure notification, auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking.

Nothing has been revealed on the powertrain front, but we expect more details to surface as the SUV gets closer to becoming production-ready.

Expect the Honda SUV RS concept to make production in Indonesia first. We’re yet to know whether this concept will make it to India, but if it does show up, it could take on the sub 4-metre SUV segment with rivals such as the  Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and Renault Kiger.

Even if we don’t get this exact SUV for India, Honda is working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market to rival the Hyundai Creta. So certain bits of the SUV RS might make a presence in Honda’s new SUV.
