Yamaha’s hybrid tech concept to take over proper EVs

XMAX

Quick Highlights:

  • Yamaha unveils the XMax SPHEV Hybrid concept

  • Gets an internal combustion engine and two electric motors

  • A showcase of the hybrid tech rather than the scooter itself

Yamaha recently unveiled the XMax SPHEV concept. The two-wheeler brand should bring the powertrain to its production models in the future. For now, the concept scooter is just a showcase of Yamaha’s technological innovation.

What it gets

For initial testing, Yamaha has opted for the XMax platform. While complete specs aren’t yet disclosed, it’s clear that the powertrain includes a single-cylinder petrol engine that runs in tandem with two electric motors.

The powertrain of the SPHEV features a dual-electric motor configuration. One motor is directly integrated into the wheel drive, acting as the primary power source. The second motor is coupled to the internal combustion engine's (ICE) crankshaft, which functions as a generator to produce electricity. It can also provide additional power to the wheels when needed. If need be, the wheel can be powered just by the ICE.

Ride Mode Possibilities

The SPHEV's hybrid powertrain can allow for multiple drive modes, offering an efficient and optimized performance. In the electric-only mode, the primary drive motor drives the scooter forward, ensuring quiet operation that’s ideal for quick, city run abouts.

As the scooter gains speed and requires more power, the system enables the hybrid mode. The internal combustion engine (ICE) kicks in, providing additional grunt to drive the scooter at higher speeds.

In automatic mode, the primary drive motor is responsible for all the low-speed maneuvers, such as standstill starts, before the ICE engine takes over for higher-speed usage. This hybrid approach allows for efficient and adaptable performance.

ZigSays

The XMax SPHEV Hybrid is still a concept under development, and that is the main reason why none of the battery or motor specifications were disclosed. While we may or may not see it in actual production, learnings from the hybrid powertrain development should surely trickle to production two-wheelers. The Yamaha RayZR and Fascino were the first scooters in the country to get a mild-hybrid powertrain. However, these are petrol-powered scooters with a starter-motor generator. The latter gives a short boost to the engine’s power, which can help with quick overtakes. The inclusion of this tech has also helped in improving the scooters’ fuel efficiency. To put it quite crudely.
