It's been three successful years for the Mahindra Thar in the country. And while that might cause some to think that the sales for the lifestyle SUV might steadily decline, the current situation is the exact antithesis of it. The sales figures are going strong and it’s the diesel that is dominating the offence and understandably so.
Here’s a look at the sales figures:

With total sales of 5,302 units in April 2023, the Mahindra Thar witnessed a 68% YoY growth in the same month. Just like in April 2022, diesel variants dominated the sales chart, but they further cemented their supremacy with a total sales share of 81.06%, compared to the petrol’s 18.94% share.
The elementary reason behind the rise in the sales of the Mahindra Thar has to be down to the launch of the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) iteration of the SUV this year. With its launch, Mahindra brought the prices of the SUV down as the 1.5-litre diesel engine and sub-4 metre length put it in a lower price bracket. This has made it more appealing to people who won’t necessarily need the off-roading capabilities of the 4WD system.

The reason behind the diesel trims doing so well is likely down to its frugal fuel sipping nature compared to the petrol, and the aforementioned affordability factor of the diesel RWD trims. You can find the deets on its powertrain specifications here.
Prices for the RWD trim of the Thar range between Rs 10.54 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh, while the AWD trims are spaced out between Rs 13.87 lakh and Rs 16.58 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). It rivals the Force Gurkha and will also take on the upcoming Maruti Jimny.
