You won’t lose any off-roading hardware or capability

  • Silver bumper highlight is now non painted.

  • Loses out on a USB port and front seats lumbar support.

  • Continues to be powered by 150PS petrol and 130PS diesel engines.

  • Priced from Rs 13.53 lakh onwards (ex-showroom).

Mahindra has taken a scalpel to the Thar to shave off a few rupees in the latest round of updates to the SUV. It retains the off-roading hardware and trim-wise features, but loses out on a couple of creature comforts such as lumbar support and one of two USB ports.

Is the new Mahindra Thar a downgrade?

On the outside, the most apparent changes are the all-black front and rear bumpers. Mahindra has done away with the silver highlighters on the bumpers in favour of unpainted trim pieces. In addition, it now gets new Ceat Crossdrive AT tyres which replace the previous Czar AT. Although these feature changes seem to be a cost-saving measure, they aren’t downgrades for regular car buyers.

However, the interior does miss out on a couple of features – for example, you get one USB port on the centre console instead of two. More importantly, the new Thar also misses out on lumbar support for the front seats.

As before, the Mahindra Thar is powered by a 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines. Their respective power figures of 150PS and 130PS are intact, and the transmission options, 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic, are the same as before.

For off-roading, the Thar has a solid rear axle, independent front suspension, and brake-based and mechanical differential locks. Its 226mm ground clearance and 650mm wading depth are unchanged.

Despite its cost saving measures, the new Mahindra Thar continues to be a sweet deal as a lifestyle SUV. Mahindra and other carmakers alike are facing multiple challenges such as the ongoing semiconductor shortage and supply chain disruptions. Nevertheless, we hope to see Mahindra bring back these creature comforts to the SUV in the near future. For now, the Thar is priced between Rs 13.53 lakh and Rs 16.03 lakh (ex-showroom).
