Can we call it a Mini Land Cruiser?

Toyota LC FJ vs Toyota Fortuner

Toyota has always held a reputation for building tough, dependable SUVs that strike a balance between utility, design, and reliability. Among its lineup, the Fortuner is one of the most popular full-size SUVs in India, and the Land Cruiser is the ultimate beast in terms of Japanese reliability and butch looks. While the Fortuner remains a favourite of the masses, Toyota has also showcased the Land Cruiser FJ Prototype at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 to amazing response.

In this report, we take a detailed look at its design elements in comparison with the Fortuner.  While both share the same Toyota DNA, their design philosophies couldn’t be more different. One leans towards modern sophistication, while the other embraces raw, functional ruggedness. Let’s take a detailed look at how the Land Cruiser FJ prototype and the Fortuner differ in terms of design, personality, and purpose.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Prototype Vs Toyota Fortuner Front Design

Starting with the Land Cruiser FJ prototype from the Japan Mobility Show 2025, its design screams utility from every angle. Toyota has chosen a boxy, squared-off silhouette that’s not just for aesthetics but also for improving cabin space and cargo volume. The straight lines, flat panels, and tall stance give it a purposeful and bulky look, something you’d expect from a vehicle built to conquer the wilderness in a compact size. The front fascia features rectangular headlamps, though you could opt for the circular units. The grille sports the bold ‘TOYOTA’ lettering instead of the modern-day logo, a styling choice that enhances its retro appeal.

The front bumper, as you would expect, has a rugged charm to it; however, there is more to it. It’s divided into multiple replaceable sections, a clever bit of design thinking aimed at easy repairability. This type of clever design enhances the practicality and utility quotient.

In contrast, the Toyota Fortuner goes in the opposite direction. It’s built for customers who want their SUV to look premium and urban-friendly, while still exuding toughness. The Fortuner features a sleek, tapered front end with sharply styled LED headlamps, a blacked-out grille and a Toyota logo placed at the centre of the grille. Overall, it has a blend of premium and rugged design elements, unlike the baby Land Cruiser, which focuses more towards the latter.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Prototype Vs Toyota Fortuner: Side Design

From the side, the contrast becomes even more pronounced. The Land Cruiser FJ prototype has flared fenders and thick cladding, which emphasise its off-road personality. The black alloy wheels and high ground clearance give it a stance that looks ready to tackle anything. You’ll notice that the wheels are pushed out to the extreme corners, a deliberate move to improve approach and departure angles and enhance cabin space. Another detail that enthusiasts will appreciate is the thick C-pillar, reminiscent of the original FJ Cruiser. Purists will appreciate this. Furthermore, you will notice that even the window lines are upright and straight, as if they were drawn using a ruler.

The Fortuner’s side profile looks familiar and simple, yet appealing and butch. Firstly, you will notice that it gets chrome elements on areas like door handles and window surrounds, adding a bit of bling. The wheel arches are rounder and not as flared as the ones on the LC FJ. The window line starts tapering upwards, and you get a more traditional design approach around the C-pillar. Unlike the FJ prototype, which wears its ruggedness like a badge of honour, the Fortuner prefers a refined, athletic stance that bridges the gap between urban sophistication and rugged confidence.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Prototype Vs Toyota Fortuner: Rear Design

At the back, the Land Cruiser FJ prototype continues its retro-themed design language. A tailgate-mounted spare wheel dominates the rear, reinforcing its old-school SUV charm. The square blacked-out panel on the tailgate gives it a unique look, complemented by vertical LED taillamps on either side. The taillights look a bit small, but goess with the quirky design of the Land Cruiser FJ. You get a chunky-looking bumper to round off the rear design.

In contrast, the Fortuner’s rear design is all about sleek modernism. It features wraparound LED taillamps, and the rear end is not as flat and upright as the Land Cruiser. You get a roof-mounted spoiler and a shark fin antenna to dial up its sportiness. The bumper here has a more subtle and modern charm. Overall, it looks like an SUV that would not look out of place pulling up to a hotel driveway.

Endless Customisation Possibilities

One area where the Land Cruiser FJ prototype truly distinguishes itself is in personalisation and outdoor adaptability. Toyota has given it a host of add-on accessories for adventure seekers, such as round headlamps, MOLLE panels for mounting outdoor gear, a snorkel, and a roof luggage carrier. These aren’t just cosmetic tweaks but functional additions designed for overlanding and off-grid travel. The FJ prototype, in essence, invites you to modify it to suit your style.

While the Fortuner too gets accessories, and can of course be customised to your preference, you might not want to mess around with it as much.

A Little Overview About The Land Cruiser FJ Prototype

The Land Cruiser FJ prototype is a near-production concept, and Toyota will launch the production version in mid-2026 for the Japanese market. For the Indian market, the chances of Toyota launching it are bleak.

The FJ Prototype was revealed at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 with features like a large infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, electronically-adjustable outside rear view mirrors, steering-mounted controls and drive modes.

In terms of safety, it will feature a Level 2 ADAS suite and could also get features like a 360-degree camera, up to 7 airbags, electronic stability control, and hill hold control.

The Land Cruiser FJ prototype gets a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission making 163 PS and 246 Nm.

ZigSays…

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ prototype and Toyota Fortuner might share the surname and parent brand, but their design ideologies are worlds apart. The FJ is crafted with ruggedness, modularity, and purpose in mind. Its squared-off body, retro headlamps, and utilitarian design language will appeal to purists who value authenticity and adventure.

The Fortuner, in contrast, is Toyota’s modern SUV success story, and has cracked the Indian market. Its design is premium and practical, and it is meant to make a statement on city streets while retaining enough off-road capability to handle a weekend escape.

Toyota Fortuner

In essence, if the Land Cruiser FJ prototype is about heritage, adventure, and durability, the Fortuner is about style, status, and versatility. Both are unmistakably Toyota, but they cater to very different definitions of what an SUV should be. Also, the FJ has the Land Cruiser name to it, which will attract buyers.

If Toyota launches the Land Cruiser FJ in India, would you consider choosing it over the immensely popular Fortuner (if they are priced similarly)? Let us know in the comments section below.
