Let’s be real here. The jaw-droppingly cool Ford Raptor remains a distant dream, and the recently launched Toyota Hilux is out of reach for most of us. And be ready to cough up north of 25 lakhs if you wish to add a range-topping Isuzu D-Max V-Cross to your garage for the weekend shenanigans. This brings us to the question – why aren’t any affordable pickups available for us petrolheads on a shoestring budget?

The Scorpio Getaway and the Tata Xenon are long gone but never forgotten. And we can’t help but think of a pickup based on the Thar. So, here’s why we think Mahindra should put a hold on everything else and action this as soon as possible.

Here’s Why Mahindra Should Green Signal The Thar-Based Pickup overview

First and foremost, we know the 5-door Thar is on track and will likely be launched next year. We also know that it will be hugely practical since it will be based on the new Scorpio N platform. So it is happening, and with the 5-door Thar in the picture, a pickup based on the same doesn’t look far-fetched anymore. And the best thing? We already know what exactly it will look like thanks to the Jeep Gladiator. We don’t see any reason why anyone wouldn’t want to see a desi version of the Gladiator, except if you own a Gladiator overseas. Well, in that case, it’s a bummer.

Nevertheless, there is a sizable void below the V-Cross where the Thar pickup can slot in beautifully. Pickups from the yesteryears have never really set the Indian charts on fire but that is not the scene anymore. Lifestyle utility vehicles are a hot topic now and a pickup based on the Thar fits the bill. With it being based on the Scorpio N’s chassis, we can also expect it to have a sorted ride and handling balance with commendable dynamics for a huge ladder-frame SUV.

Mahindra already has the powertrain combinations for the job. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are well-suited for most of the obstacles that you can throw at them. This, coupled with the automatic and manual gearbox options along with Mahindra’s proven 4X4 system, means business.

So, we are looking at a hairy-chested 4x4 double-cab pickup with good on-road manners, impressive mud plucking capabilities, competent engines, enough space for your family and some more space for whatever you wish – be it farm produce or extra luggage or even two full-size motorcycles. And all this without breaking the bank. What are you waiting for, Mahindra?
