Sure, there’s that ineludible additional cost that you pay initially, but the gaps are being bridged and it isn’t as big of a niche as it used to be. The likes of the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3 are the perfect embodiment of that narrative – posing the option of relatively affordable electric hatchbacks under the Rs 13-lakh mark.

Both the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3 have been tested for real-world range on previous occasions, which involved both city and highway driving. But admittedly, most of their owners will be confining them to the city limits, because that is where these EVs really come alive.

So in the name of authentic testing, we charged both of them to the max and took them for a stroll in the city – a stroll that would deplete their batteries entirely and give us their true real world range, when driven in the city only. Mind you, we drove both of them like just any normal person would. So no hyper miling, no switching off AC and other stuff that would save battery.

Pottering around town with a claimed range of nearly 320km for both EVs isn’t inviting or exciting, as our resident editors, Tushar and Arun, found out for themselves.
