Stellantis, one of the largest global automotive groups, has brands like Citroen and Jeep in India, mostly offering ICE cars. Now that the EV car market is steadily rising on our shores, the auto giant is set to introduce Chinese electric carmaker Leapmotor in India. The start timelines of their operations are not confirmed as yet. However, this move will bring more exciting EV models to the market while also expanding Stellantis’s EV portfolio in the country.
Leapmotor is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer who started operations in 2015, with its headquarters in Hangzhou, China. The brand specialises in EVs and also operates in several international markets, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Israel. They plan to introduce their EV lineup in India. The Chinese carmaker’s current portfolio includes the T03 hatchback, B10 and C10 SUVs. Which of these cars will be introduced in India first is yet to be known.
That said, here’s a quick explainer on the three models offered by Leapmotor:
The T03 is a compact electric hatchback made for city driving. It comes with a 37.3 kWh battery paired with an electric motor that produces 95 PS and offers a claimed range of up to 395 km (WLTP, urban cycle). It supports fast charging, going from 30 to 80 percent in just 36 minutes using a 48 kW charger. For features it has a touchscreen infotainment system, a minimal dashboard layout, and a sunroof.
The B10 is an upcoming electric compact SUV positioned below the C10 that is yet to be launched globally. Its exterior design is heavily inspired by the larger C10 and it will get a clean and premium interior with ambient lighting and a minimalistic layout. Some of the features include a panoramic sunroof and a 14.6-inch infotainment. Leapmotor hasn’t revealed its powertrain specs yet. However, it could serve as a mid-range option in the lineup.
The C10 is Leapmotor’s flagship SUV, available in both fully electric (BEV) and range-extender (REEV) versions. The BEV model uses a 69.9 kWh battery offering 424 km (WLTP) range, while the REEV pairs a 28.4 kWh battery with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, giving it over 950 km of range. Both variants support fast charging: 30 minutes for the BEV and 18 minutes for the REEV. It also offers two interior theme options and many modern features expected from a top-end SUV.
Every carmaker in India has been getting serious about the electric vehicle space lately. Now that Stellantis has announced Leapmotor, which is an EV-focussed brand, we are uncertain on how the brand will perform in India, considering we don’t know about it and how it is performing in its home turf, the Chinese market. And with Jeep and Citroen, Stellantis hasn’t quite found the stronghold it would have hoped for in the Indian market.
