The SsangYong X200 Sketch Looks Like A Jimny-Wrangler Mashup

The folks at Ssangyong have released the design sketches of an all-new SUV, codenamed the X200. And it looks as if the Suzuki Jimny and Jeep Wrangler had a child.  

As per the sketches, the SUV clearly looks like a rugged off-roader heavily inspired by the Jimny and the Wrangler. Up front, the quirky grille design with circular headlamps and slats look similar to the Jimny. Also, with the brawny fenders, wide wheel arches, and what looks like a relatively long wheelbase, the SUV’s silhouette and proportions seem Wrangler-like.

The carmaker has said that the X200 will utilize a new design philosophy called ‘Powered by Toughness.’ This is the same design theme that will shape the recently announced J100 midsize EV. 

We don’t yet know what will power the upcoming SUV. But, considering the J100 will have electric propulsion, we reckon the X200 will also get the same. Also, expect a standard ICE option to be offered alongside the e-powertrain.

Expect SsangYong’s new SUV to officially debut sometime later this year. What does this mean for India? Well, given how things are poised right now, it could mean zilch. The Mahindra & Mahindra-owned company has been embroiled in a legal tangle since December 2020 after defaulting on the payment of loans amounting to 60 billion South Korean won (approximately Rs 400 crore). Moreover, the Mahindra Group, in June 2020, had decided to stop investing in SsangYong Motor.

That said, in India, we have the SsangYong G4 Rexton rebadged as the Mahindra Alturas G4 and the XUV300 based on the Tivoli SUV.
