The Tata Zest is the cheapest diesel automatic in the country and is commanding high waiting periods

The Tata Zest seems to have caught the minds of the Indian car buying public with its new crisp looks and more importantly a new diesel automatic version. The Tata Zest XMA F-Tronic, priced at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) is a great option for someone looking for a really well equipped family sedan with modern looks and a fuel-efficient engine.

When contacted, dealers mentioned how most enquiries about the Zest were for the XMA F-Tronic version, which is equipped with Tata Motor’s new Magneti-Marelli powered AMT transmission. Although waiting period for the automatic diesel version is currently pegged at about three months, expect an increase in the same as enquiries and bookings begin to pour in. The Tata Zest XMA F-Tronic can be booked for an initial booking amount of Rs 21,000.

The Tata Zest’s manual gearbox equipped models too have a waiting period of around 1.5-2 months due to a high number of bookings. Sources have also mentioned about how the public’s reaction to the new ‘Revotron’ turbocharged petrol engine have also exceeded expectations. Tata Motors have received about 25,000 enquires for the Zest so far and will officially reveal the initial booking figure soon.

Magneti-Marelli has also stepped up its production facilities so as to provide the AMT module for the likes of the Zest and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio which incidentally has a waiting period of over a year for the automatic version. Magneti-Marelli will also soon be starting work on a brand new production facility in Manesar near the Maruti factory to provide speedy deliveries of AMT units to Indian manufacturers.
