MG is planning on bringing a second, more affordable EV to India within the next two years.
Already in the mix with the electric version of the ZS SUV, the British carmaker now wants to introduce an EV priced below Rs 20 lakh. Currently, the ZS EV, MG’s only electric offering in the market, is priced from Rs 20.99 lakh to Rs 24.18 lakh (ex-showroom). It has received quite the reception in India, with over 3,000 units sold since its launch in January 2020.
However, there are still some hurdles to cross. MG had earlier set a target to introduce its second EV in 2022, but with the pandemic wreaking havoc and the global shortage of semiconductors, the carmaker now aims to launch it by 2023.
Rajeev Chaba, MG Motor India President and MD, said to PTI, “We have been very pleased with our electric vehicle product performance till now. We intend to launch more electric cars in the future and hopefully we can look at a car below Rs 20 lakh as our second EV in the future. We are not defining the timelines now due to the COVID situation and shortages of essential materials, especially chips. So hopefully in two years, we can do it."
The ZS EV, available in 31 cities in the country, is powered by a 145PS electric motor and returns a claimed range of 419km.
