Maruti Suzuki XL6 vs Renault Triber: MPVs Compared

The past couple of weeks have witnessed the launch of two MPVs which have contrasting philosophies. The new Maruti Suzuki XL6 goes towards the bigger, brawny and premium direction. The Renault Triber on the other hand, sacrifices some premium comforts for a more practical and affordable setup. Let’s have an in-depth look at these two contrasting MPVs and figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are against each other:

From the outside, it is clear that the XL6 is the larger option, being considerably longer, wider and taller with a longer wheelbase compared to the Triber. However, the Triber has held true to its modular platform by giving customers the option to remove the third row all together, liberating more boot space than even the larger XL6. 

Another major highlight for the Triber is that unlike the XL6, which is a 6-seater, it can house an extra person, being a 7-seater (provided they sit more intimately). In addition to this, the Triber’s removable ‘Easyfix’ third row also enable the MPV to be altered to a 6-seat or 5-seater option. The XL6’s 6 seater configuration does however have its benefits, with individual and more spacious captain seats in the 2nd row which can accommodate larger occupants with relative ease.

Inside, both MPVs sport silver inserts on the dashboard, but the XL6 gets an all-black leather upholstery compared to the fabric material present in the Triber. Both MPVs are adequately equipped with features like DRLs, keyless entry, push button stop/start and tilt steering. They also get a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. But the Triber gets a bigger 8-inch touchscreen compared to the XL6 at 7 inches. With the kit on offer being better than the Triber, it culminates into a more user friendly experince overall in the XL6.

The XL6 further gains an advantage over the Triber with features like LED headlamps, electronically adjustable and foldable OVRMs, auto climate control and steering-mounted controls. The Triber’s strength lies in its practicality with a dual glove compartment, an additional A/C vent in the third row and a spacious central storage unit below the central armrest which is cooled.

Power:

Under the hood, both MPVs run petrol motors, but the XL6 being much larger packs a bigger motor as well. It has 105PS and 130Nm in its belly and is BS6 compliant as well. Not to mention, the Smart Hybrid system which gives it a mild electric boost under load. However, that power comes at a cost as the Triber is more fuel efficient at a claimed 20kmpl. The Triber also misses out on an automatic gearbox, which Renault says will come at a later date.

When it comes to safety, both MPVs get common features like ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with rear view camera and airbags. The Triber gains a slight edge with 2 more airbags compared to the XL6. But that’s where the advantage ends for the Triber as the XL6 packs additional safety features like ESP and ISOFIX seats.

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 is a larger, no-compromise MPV that makes a good pick if you favour luxury, space, features and a more premium experience. However this premium comes at a cost that is around Rs 3.3 lakh more than the top spec Triber in just its base variant. The top spec XL6 sets you further apart by a full Rs 5 lakh. 

While the Renault Triber may be smaller, it is the preferable option for those looking for versatility in space, low budget and value for money. However, you will miss out on the luxuries associated with a family car like the XL6.
