Besides an extra set of doors, the five-door Thar could also get additional features

  • The five-door version is likely to launch in 2023.

  • It should have a longer wheelbase, a spacious second row, and a bigger boot.

  • Will use the same powertrains as the three-door version, albeit in a higher state of tune.

  • A 2WD drivetrain option could be offered as well.

  • Expect the upcoming Thar to sell at a premium over the existing model.

Mahindra has revealed its future lineup, which has nine SUVs expected to arrive by 2026. Of this lot, the one that caught our attention was the five-door Thar.

Yes, Mahindra has finally put all rumours to rest. The five-door version of the SUV is on the cards, expected to go on sale sometime around 2023. The Thar aside, other models in the pipeline include the next-gen Bolero and XUV300, along with a couple of EVs.

We expect the Thar’s design to remain unchanged, barring the extra set of doors and the increased length (the three-door version is a sub-4m SUV) that should free up additional space at the back. That aside, other design-related changes will be minimal, similar to what we saw on the Wrangler’s five-door version.

However, there could be additional features like auto AC, push-button start/stop, and a larger touchscreen.

Under the hood, the five-door Thar may utilise the three-door SUV’s 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines, but in a higher state of tune. Transmission options will likely consist of a 5-speed manual and a torque converter automatic. It could get an optional 2WD drivetrain as well.

Currently, the SUV sells from Rs 12.11 lakh to Rs 14.16 lakh (ex-showroom). We expect the five-door version to certainly retail at a premium.
