While we've seen plenty of spy pictures of the production version of the i20 Active, here are official renderings to see how it was conceptualized

Hyundai might be finding it quite difficult to keep its new cars under wraps with smartphone paparazzi swarming every inch of the country. Recently we saw a set of spy pictures of the i20 Active completely undisguised, over a fortnight before its official unveiling. While we all know what the crossover hatchback looks like now, here are a couple of renderings released by Hyundai to give you an idea of what the concept could look like.

But first the name… The i20 Cross as it was being called a few weeks ago is officially christened the i20 Active. It is the crossover version of the Elite i20 and will be priced at a premium of about Rs 50,000 to an equivalent variant of the Elite i20. Hyundai isn’t calling the i20 Active a crossover, but instead terms it as a ‘SUV looking car’. We’ll reserve our judgment till we see the car in the flesh but in all probability, it will be on the lines of the Fiat Avventura sans the externally mounted spare wheel at the rear.

Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe in Rüsselsheim, Germany has penned this version of the i20. Crossover cred comes from chunkier plastic cladding, a more muscular bumper with rounded fog lamps and a reworked headlamp cluster. The alloy wheel design in the rendering looks similar to the spy pictures. The plastic cladding theme continues all around the car and the sketches do show a raised suspension setup and better ground clearance. A matching set of rear fog lamps in the rear bumper round off the crossover design neatly.

The i20 Active will go up against the likes of the Volkswagen Polo Cross, Fiat Avventura and the Toyota Etios Cross. The launch of the i20 Active is slated for mid March and we will be bringing to you our impressions of this latest entrant to the crossover segment just before that. Meanwhile, you can check out what this car looks like undisguised right here
