The hatchback last received an update in November 2019

  • The i20 Active was offered with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel motor.
  • The hatchback was launched way back in 2015.
  • Its rivals included the Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and the Volkswagen Cross Polo.
  • The 2020 Hyundai i20 will break cover next month.

Ahead of the impending switch to BS6 norms (April 1), Hyundai has pulled the plug on the i20 Active. The last time we heard about the Active was in November 2019, when it received a small update in the form of wireless charging and a colour regij. We highly doubt if Hyundai will reintroduce the i20 Active post BS6 implementation. Meanwhile, the 2020 i20 is all set to break cover at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The i20 Active, which is based on the current-gen Elite i20, was launched in 2015, following the sudden surge of crossover hatchbacks. Although it sold well during the initial months, the i20 Active, like most other crossover hatchbacks, succumbed to the same fate of low sales. And as mentioned, the chances of the i20 Active making its way back are extremely thin.

Basically a cosmetically beefed-up version of the Elite i20, it came with the same set of powertrain and features as the latter. Powering the hatchback were 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines. The petrol engine produced 83PS and 114Nm of twist while the diesel CRDI unit was good enough for 90PS and 220Nm of torque. Gearbox options included a 5-speed manual for the petrol and a 6-speed manual for the diesel.

The i20 came packed with some interesting features like  Arkamys sound system, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, smart key, cooled glovebox, and rear AC vents.

The upcoming i20 will feature a major overhaul with a new platform and redesigned styling. Going by the design sketches released by Hyundai, it will sport a sharper and mature design language to the current iteration. The existing Elite i20 is also expected to get the boot soon.
