With stage 1 of Dakar 2020 done and dusted, the focus was on the next stage, which spanned 367km from Al Wajh to Neom. This stage saw another shuffle of the order with some surprising results as well. Here is all that happened in the second stage:
Cars
Stage 2 for the Cars category saw a return to form from Toyota as Giniel de Villiers took top honors with X-Raid Mini’s Orlando Terranova taking second place. Khalid Al Qassimi piloting a privateer Peugeot and Mathieu Serradori in a Century buggy round off four different cars finishing in the top four. The Toyota racer was helped by Yazeed Al Rajhi relinquishing more than 20 minutes in the last legs of the stage. Fernando Alonso suffered a major setback after running well in 4th due to suffering wheel and suspension damage after the 160km mark.
Bikes
The Bikes category saw the established order from Stage 1 struggle and have a surprise winner in the form of Ross Branch. Riding as a privateer KTM, the African rider finished ahead of Sam Sunderland, with Pablo Quintanilla rounding off the podium for Husqvarna. The top two from stage 1 suffered a difficult second stage with Toby Price and Ricky Brabec classified 15th and 11th respectively.
Trucks
In the second stage for the heavy hitters. Siarhei Viazovich improved on his 2nd place from stage 1, to take the win for Maz. He was followed by Dmitry Sotnikov and Andrey Karginov to round off a 2-3 finish for Kamaz. Stage 1 winner Anton Shibalov dropped to 6th for stage 2, however there’s still another 10 stages to go.
