Tesla set up shop in India in Bangalore under the name ‘Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited’ earlier this year

Tesla has begun testing the Model 3 in India, as is evident from these shots from Pune.

The entry-level electric sedan was spotted completely draped in camouflage and it appears that it was out on a test run. This means that the Model 3 can be expected to launch here by the end of this year or early 2022. Due to the camouflage it is tough to see specifics with regards to design details. However the silhouette is unmistakably that of the Model 3, and so are the alloy wheels.

Overseas, the Model 3 is offered with a bunch of features such as a massive 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, tinted sunroof, OTA updates, 14-speaker audio system, and 12-way power-adjustable heated front seats. However, its most significant feature is the Autopilot self-driving functionality, and it remains to be seen whether it will be offered in India or not. India has more stringent and wildly different vehicle autopilot rules from western countries.

Under the hood, the Model 3 comes with three powertrain options in the USA. The Standard Plus offers a range of 432km, using a rear-wheel drivetrain. The Long Range (568km) and Performance (507km) both use an all-wheel drive dual-motor setup, with the Performance getting a top speed of 261kmph and a 3.1 second-0-97kmph time. In India, Tesla could offer the base Standard Plus variant first, with the other two being offered later on.

It seems like Tesla will test the waters in India with the Model 3, and depending on the results, could offer other models like the Model Y and Model S. The carmaker is also planning on setting up a manufacturing facility in the country.

The Model 3 will be offered in India as a completely built-up (CBU) unit from Tesla’s Gigafactory in China. It is likely to be offered with a price tag of Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
