Audi R8 With A V8? A Comeback You Want!

Iron Man’s R8 is evolving with time, parting ways with the V10 – what we can expect as Audi and Lamborghini put magic together.

A car so goated that we’ve had it as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man’s choice of ride or Cristiano Ronaldo’s real-life choice. Yes, it has always been special. But then Audi decided to discontinue the R8 and it had us wondering - would it ever return? Guess what!

The iconic R8 is set to make a comeback globally in 2027. And this time, it will be a plug-in hybrid with a Lamborghini-sourced twin-turbo V8 under the hood. A shift from its iconic naturally aspirated V10, sure, but with Audi and Lamborghini working together again, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Audi R8: The Cult It Was!

The R8 for Audi was their halo car! It debuted in the year 2006 and has been a poster boy of performance ever since. It showed what an everyday supercar could be. Besides being the kind of supercar you would drool for, it had a design philosophy and a cabin you could live with daily.

It was a machine that took on the Ferraris and Lamborghinis and let’s not forget it held on to its own. The first-ever R8 came with a V8, too, which went on to be in production till 2015.

It was equipped with a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine and formed the foundation of the next generations that followed until it turned towards a V10 in its GT high-performance variant in 2012. So, in a way, this return will mark the R8’s return to its roots, for that matter.

2027 Audi R8: What To Expect?

It will not be just another supercar and with the crazy performance it is sought to offer, it's better we talk about its mechanicals first.

At the heart of the upcoming Audi R8 will be an 800 PS 4-litre plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8 engine paired with three electric motors and a 3.8 kWh lithium-ion battery with an electric-only range of 9.6 km. Two of the motors are mounted on the front axle, providing independent power to the front wheels. The third motor is positioned between the V8 engine and the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), serving as a starter generator hence making up for an all-wheel drivetrain.

This setup is expected to push out a not-so-humble 907 PS. No wonder in thinking what it means. You run from 0 to 100 kmph sitting in it in 2.7 seconds with a top speed of over 320 kmph.

If you’re someone who loved the raw sound of the V10, don’t be too quick to call the V8 hybrid a downgrade. Sure, the R8 with a V10 was charming, but with the new powertrain now it's not just about the numbers. It will likely be faster and more powerful than before. It may sound different, but when you blast the pedal, you know what truly matters – the feeling. And that the new R8 will deliver.

As for the design, Audi hasn’t revealed official images yet. It can retain its aggressive stance with a few cosmetic tweaks like a wider front grille, larger air intakes, and a sportier rear end with redesigned taillights.

Our Thoughts!

The Audi R8 has been a dream machine for many, including the author. From gracing Hollywood blockbusters to being a staple in car culture, video games and even sitting on our shelves as a Hot Wheels collection, it has left a mark far beyond the streets.

This time, while the V10’s symphony will be missed, the new R8 won’t be just about nostalgia though. Audi, under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, and with a collaboration with Lamborghini, will make sure that the new R8’s hybrid powertrain doesn’t let an enthusiast’s thrill take the back seat. With a little different roar, the legacy of the R8 - if launched in 2027, will follow.

Are you excited for the future of Audi R8? Or will you find yourself longing for the naturally aspirated past? Let us know in the comments below.
