The Wrangler was spotted doing ARAI testing, hinting at an imminent Indian launch

  • Retains the classic Wrangler styling.
  • American variants get a plethora of roof and door options.
  • Gets a new dashboard with Jeep’s U-Connect infotainment system.
  • India launch expected in Q3 2019.

American SUV maker Jeep has been testing the 2019 Wrangler on our roads. The Wrangler spied testing here is based on the fourth generation JL series which has not yet been launched in India. It was wearing an “ON TEST BY ARAI” sticker which gives us a hint that the SUV maker is planning to bring the next-gen Wrangler by Q3 2019.

From the above spyshot, it is clear that the Wrangler’s design is more of an evolution rather than revolution. Yes, the iconic 7-slat grille and round headlights are present here. The SUV also gets two prominent DRLs mounted on the muscular front wheel arches. Complimenting the tough look at the front is a beefy bumper with a set of foglamps housed in it. At the rear, the Wrangler gets the spare tyre mounted on its boot just like a traditional off-roader. Flanking the boot are a set of modern looking LED tail lamps. Also seen at the rear are tough looking wheel arches and a beefy bumper which suits the character of a Jeep. The Wrangler seen testing here is the Sahara Edition, which gets a hard-top variant, chrome surround around fog lamps and dual tone alloy wheels. It must be mentioned that in the United States, you can opt for the Wrangler with a soft top as well as a 3-door or 5-door variant as well.

The interior of the fourth-gen Wrangler that’s to be launched in India hasn’t been spied yet. But we know that the fourth-gen Wrangler sold overseas gets a new dashboard. The steering wheel gets the same three-spoke treatment with a sleeker design. You get a more modern instrument console with a huge MID flanked by the rev counter and speedometer. You also get a huge 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that’s similar to the one seen on the Jeep Compass Limited Plus. Flanking the infotainment system are a set of round AC vents that has been a tradition with the Wrangler. Below the infotainment system, you get chunky looking AC and audio controls.

The third-gen Wrangler Unlimited which is sold here uses a 3.6-litre V6 petrol motor and a 2.8-litre diesel motor mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The former produces 284PS of power and 347Nm of torque, where as the latter produces 200PS of power and 460Nm of torque. Being a Wrangler, the carmaker will slap it with all the off-road equipment like four-wheel drive, low range gearbox, hill descent control, off road modes and more.

The fourth generation Wrangler will eventually hit our roads in Q3 2019. We expect the Sahara edition to join the Wrangler Unlimited as an additional variant. Also expect the 2019 iteration of the SUV to start in the range of Rs 60 lakh. The Jeep Wrangler is a niche car in India and has no real competitors to compete with.
