The facelifted Wrangler has a better stance and a long list of premium features

  • Jeep has globally premiered the 2024 Wrangler SUV.

  • Gets facelifted front end, better standard equipment and off-roading hardware.

  • Off-roading-oriented Rubicon model gets the latest Dana 44 rear axle, more hardcore Rubicon X and Rubicon 392 variants.

  • USA launch later in 2023, will be launched in other countries in 2024.

Jeep has taken the wraps off the facelifted Wrangler, one of the most iconic 4x4 nameplates ever. The new Wrangler looks ready to bear Jeep’s off-roading legacy with its revised exterior and more capable off-roading hardware and powertrains.

The new Wrangler will hit the market in its home country of the United States of America (USA) later in 2023. Overseas launches will be held in 2024, and the facelifted SUV will come to India as a replacement for the existing Wrangler and Wrangler Rubicon.

Classic design, better-equipped SUV

With a revised front-end styling and taller ride height, the Jeep Wrangler looks a lot more rugged than before. At the front, the iconic seven-slat Jeep grille is now a larger unit and features black trim bits. It’s flanked by circular headlights, all placed within a new, rounder “face” that gives the new SUV even more of a retro-modern look.

Most styling changes are limited to the front end only, so the Wrangler’s silhouette is unchanged in the profile and at the rear. The ground clearance of 327mm (12.9 inches) gives the new Wrangler a more off-road-ready stance.

Inside, the hooded dashboard gets numerous changes and looks more up with the times with its larger, standard 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment touchscreen and neater HVAC controls and other switchgear. Other features include voice recognition, cruise control, six airbags and driver-assistance tech (ADAS) such as forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control.

Some variants also get 12-way powered and heated front seats, a nine-speaker Alpine sound system and an integrated front camera for off-roading.

Most capable Wrangler yet: Off-roading hardware

The Jeep Wrangler wears its “Trail Rated” badge with pride and gets the following off-roading kit as standard:

  • Dana solid front and rear axles

  • Optional full-float rear axle

  • Low-range transfer case (Command-Trac, Selec-Trac or Rock-Trac, depending on variant)

  • Locking differentials

Here are the nerdy details about the SUV’s off-roading capability:

Parameter

2024 Jeep Wrangler

Approach angle

47.4 degrees

Departure angle

40.4 degrees

Ramp breakover angle

27.8 degrees

Water wading capacity

863mm (34 inches)

  • Higher ground clearance results in better approach, departure and ramp breakover angles for the new Wrangler.

  • The water-wading capability is impressive even for a standard-spec Wrangler. For comparison, the Thar has a 650mm wading capacity.

New Wrangler Rubicon, Rubicon X and Rubicon 392

As before, the Wrangler gets a Rubicon version that’s factory-modified for off-roading. It gets the following kit:

  • Next-gen Dana 44 HD full-float solid rear axle

  • Rock-Trac part-time low-range transfer case

  • Electronic front anti-roll bar disconnect

  • Tru-lock front and rear differential locks

  • 17-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tyres

  • Available Warn winch with 3.6 tonne capacity

In addition to the Wrangler Rubicon, the SUV will also get a 470PS V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392 version alongside an all-new Wrangler Rubicon X variant with the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In India, the new Wrangler should get the 2-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, making 270PS and 400Nm in the 2024 SUV.

The new Wrangler and its Rubicon version are expected to arrive in India since the SUVs already exist here. Currently, the Wrangler is imported in the form of complete knock-down kits (CKDs) that are locally assembled.

With launches outside the US scheduled for 2024, it’ll be a while before we see the new Wrangler being launched in India. It’s one of the few lifestyle SUVs you can buy in our country, so it doesn’t have any direct rivals in its price segment.
