There is no question that the second-generation Mahindra Thar commands a towering presence with its design philosophy, but there’s no harm in slightly amping up the off-roader’s appeal. And that's exactly what Mahindra’s recently appointed Chief Design Officer, Pratap Bose, hinted at via a design render on a Christmas post on Instagram.
Since it's Christmas, it isn’t a surprise that Santa Claus has ditched his trusty sleigh for the Thar in this render. But look closer, and you’ll notice subtle tweaks. Starting at the front, there is a sleek curvaceous bumper which is definitely preferable over the boxy unit we have on the real thing and could also improve its approach angle. In fact, this design render looks quite similar to an early Thar concept that was showcased during the off-roader’s unveiling.
Move towards the fender, and there’s a scoop which adds a bit of sporty flair to the off-roader. Another interesting bit is up top where there is no roof, but there seems to be a triangular roll cage-like structure which extends to the rear.
While we didn’t get a look inside, we think it’ll be just as loaded as the real thing. Features include a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, manual AC, power steering, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, and a multi-info display.
Under the hood, the Mahindra Thar is powered by two engine options: a 150PS 2-litre petrol and a 130PS 2.2-litre diesel, paired with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic options. Both engines are specced with a four-wheel drivetrain and a low-range gearbox.
While this is just a render from Pratap Bose, we wish the design changes on the Thar make it onto the real thing in the near future as part of a midlife refresh. The Mahindra Thar currently retails from Rs 12.78 lakh to Rs 15.08 lakh (ex-showroom) and locks horns with the Force Gurkha. It will also have the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny to go up against soon.
