Integrating ChatGPT in the in-car voice controls can be a pioneering move for revolutionising voice controls, as we know how useful this new AI tool is

We reckon it is safe to say that in-car voice controls are a feature that didn’t particularly take off as one would have expected. Their useability, in most cases, is limited to a predefined set of commands and they are a feature usually left unused when not being flaunted about as a gimmick to have. But thanks to Mercedes and its new AI-powered Beta program which uses ChatGPT for operation, in-car voice commands, as we know them, could take on an entirely new face.

The German carmaker has rolled out an optional beta program, which integrates ChatGPT within the system and opens up a whole new world of possibilities for voice-initiated inputs and commands. It is available in the US for over 9 lakh vehicles equipped with the marque’s MBUX infotainment system from June 16 onwards. For the uninitiated, MBUX is the design interface that Mercedes vehicles use for its infotainment.

ChatGPT has been integrated by leveraging Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service; however, for privacy reasons, Mercedes holds complete control over the IT processes and the corresponding data that will be collected, as the carmaker cites data protection is top priority.

It’ll be accessible via the same ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice command function. The difference will be that the commands will no longer be limited to small tasks like opening the sunroof or turning on seat ventilation, and neither will its data set be restricted. So you can ask literally anything you feel like, and ChatGPT’s AI will preach on it, given that the question isn’t threatening or explicit.

The usage of voice controls will also be more natural; and for ironical purposes, more humane, thanks to the model's better understanding of language and topics. Mercedes even says that you will be able to hold full-fledged conversations with the system. However, don’t expect it to replace your friends, given that the technology is still in its nascent stages.

The program will be monitored by Mercedes for any potential risks and constantly improve along the way for polishing its useability. Willing customers can participate via the Mercedes me app or their vehicle’s voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program”.
