The Mahindra Thar gets more powertrain choices, while the Jimny is offered with one petrol engine and four-wheel drivetrain

When it comes to capable off-roaders in India, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door and the Mahindra Thar are two of the most popular choices available to buy. In this report, we’ll be looking at the sales figures of both the models to see which one is the more popular choice.

The sales of the Thar has been consistent for the past three months, with nearly similar numbers. On the other hand, the Jimny is seeing a decline in sales month on month, with its best performance being in August (3104 units). Mahindra’s overall sales numbers have always been on the rise due to the festive season sales and the increase in production capacity.

Powering the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that puts out 105PS/134Nm, while the Mahindra Thar is offered with three powertrain choices which includes a 118PS/300Nm 1.5-litre diesel, a 130PS/300Nm 2.2-litre diesel and a 150PS/320Nm 2-litre turbo petrol engine. You can have the Jimny with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive only, while the Thar can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission as well as rear-wheel and four-wheel drive options.

Prices for the Thar RWD start from Rs 10.98 lakh, and for the Thar 4WD start from Rs 14.03 lakh (ex-showroom). The Jimny, which is only offered in 4WD variant, starts from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from being rivals to each other, they also compete with the Force Gurkha.
